RONNIE ON THE RADIO (2 CD SET)

!
ronnie wood cd

The Ronnie Wood Radio Show was first broadcast on April 9, 2010. The show, which goes out on Absolute Radio from Monday to Thursday, repeated Friday, is repeated again on Saturday on Absolute’s sister station, Classic Rock. To use Ronnie’s own words, “[He] opens his little cage once a week for an hour”, playing his personal favourite tracks, often by artists he has worked with. The shows also feature many of Ronnie’s great rock ‘n’ roll stories prompted by the tunes he plays and you can even hear the seasoned rocker strumming his guitar in the studio in-between tracks.  The shows are billed as “The soundtrack to Ronnie Wood’s rock ’n’ roll life” and for this edition of “Ronnie On The Radio” we have chosen 50 rock ’n’ roll era tunes from the first 50 shows. The Ronnie Wood Radio Show has been a great success for our poacher turned gamekeeper– a success that culminated in Wood being named 2011 Music Radio Personality of the Year at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

CD - AMY WINEHOUSE'S JUKEBOX

!
amy winehouse jukebox

In her tragically short life and even shorter career, Amy Winehouse gave the world a fleeting glimpse of what might have been. For a few years her star burned brightly, before the 27-year old with the passionately soulful voice and emotionally drenched lyrics was fatally undone by her own personal demons. Amys music touched the whole world and while a true original when it came to both composition and performance, she was proud of her varied influences which informed her style and sparked her imagination. This CD includes 26 tracks of Amys favourite music, ranging from the cool jazz vocals of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald through the lush orchestrations and pure pop sensibilities of Phil Spectors Wall Of Sound, via classic singer-songwriters like Carole King and crashing in on the late 80s Rap sounds of NWA all via Be Bop, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Motown, Ska and many other styles. This delightful compilation is a true tribute to Amys own music and represents the sounds which bought to her, happiness, joy and inspiration during a life which, albeit short, was one lived with the type of gusto most of us can barely dare to imagine.

CD - ROBERT PLANT'S JUKEBOX

!
robert plant jukebox

Although Robert Plant will always be inextricably linked with the biggest band in the history of rock music, his solo career, which now spans more than 30 years, has been immensely varied and fascinating. Plant’s musical loves and influences include Rock, Blues, British Celtic Folk, West Coast Psychedelic Rock, Indian Ragas, and a deep love of North African, especially Arabic, music. Plant’s empathy for all kinds of music cultures began when he was traversing the planet with Led Zeppelin. As early as 1972, Plant and Page recorded ‘Friends’ and ‘Four Sticks’ with a group of Indian musicians in Bombay. Although these recordings, made in March ’72, were not officially released, they did offer a glimpse as to the direction that Plant and Page might take Zeppelin’s music. One of the band’s greatest musical achievements, ‘Kashmir’, ultimately rose out of this quest to explore other cultures. Begun in 1973, but not released until February 1975, ‘Kashmir’, with its many musical patterns of classical Moroccan, Middle Eastern and Indian music, would be the first time the band managed to showcase in one song all of the elements that made up the Led Zeppelin sound. Robert Plant’s fascination with both North African and Indian music cannot be overstated and he has talked at length about these influences in many interviews. In 2005, Plant told Jane Stevenson of the Toronto Sun: “When I was seventeen I met a girl who was born in India and we married and had three children. All around me at that time in England where I lived was Indian communities ... When I travelled in the early Led Zeppelin days, Jimmy and I stopped off quite a bit in Thailand and India … and were able to just explore ... I am part now of a movement, I guess, a fusion between North Africa, West Africa, Mali, Southern Morocco, (Algeria) and western rock music.” In a 2003 interview Plant told Banning Eyre: “From 1971 … I’ve been travelling in the south of Morocco ... I was always exposed to this amazing timbre … it was reminding me constantly of my youth and my love of Son House and Charlie Patton … very archaic African music … The Race Records of the late ’20s and early ’30s were kind of jolly ditties mixed with some real primal music. When I got to Gulmin, Tantan Tarfaya and into Southern Morocco, I heard the grandfather of this music. And I’ve been glued to it ever since.” Robert Plant still has a vivid memory of how his life’s musical wanderlust began when he first heard Elvis Presley on his uncle’s gramophone. Robert was only seven or eight years of age and yet he has said that he soon began to feel the tone of Presley’s voice stir the “deepest emotion of the human soul”. “Robert Plant’s Jukebox” traces the singer’s ongoing quest of discovery by selecting some of the music that has informed and inspired one of the most remarkable and multi-faceted artist of his generation.

CD - PINK FLOYD JUKEBOX

!
pink floyd jukebox

Truly original and wholly unique, Pink Floyd are renowned for their sonic experimentation and musical innovation, creating a sound all of their own in the process. But while their music would greatly inspire a huge range of artists who came along in their wake, it was not created without its own influences. Indeed Floyd members have never been shy to name-check an eclectic range of songwriters and performers who had come before. Across the whimsical psychedelia of the Barrett era through the ambient progressive groove that would propel the band towards the enormous success they eventually achieved, they were informed and inspired by numerous different genres and artists. The raw country blues of Pink Anderson and Floyd Council – who of course additionally inspired the band’s name – were favourites of Syd Barrett, with Dave Gilmour citing Tommy Steele as important as Elvis! The pioneering work of electronic mavericks Stockhausen and Varese co-exist with Dylan, Miles Davis and Bo Diddley, who all played their part in what would become the Pink Floyd sound too. This compilation, complete with 16 page booklet featuring notes by music historian Derek Barker, documents these influences and many more besides, across 23, always surprising, often obscure tracks on his quite extraordinary ‘jukebox’ collection.

CD - NICK DRAKE'S JUKEBOX

!

One of contemporary music’s true originals, the inimitable songs of Nick Drake are often difficult to imagine having been influenced by anyone but himself. But as with all true musical giants, Drake’s compositions and style were informed by a diverse range of musicians, songwriters and performers who came before. From the sublime finger-picking and glorious tunes of the wholly under-rated Bert Jansch to the country blues styles of Big Bill Broonzy and Reverend Gary Davis - via Donovan, The Yardbirds and Miles Davis, he listened to all of them and many others besides. The inspiration these mavericks provided motivated the often manically depressed Nick Drake into writing, recording and, on the very rare occasion, performing some of the most beautiful music ever written – albeit, tragically, the process would contribute in no small way to his untimely death at the age of just 26. This compilation traces the roots of Nick Drake’s astonishing music and features all of the above mentioned artists and many others– with 24 superb and moving tracks, which now can be appreciated all together on this collection, enabling the appreciation of where this mysterious and legendary figure found much of his musical muse and hopefully, for a man often tortured by his own existence, at least a little comfort. The set is completed with a 16-page booklet featuring extensive sleevenotes by music historian, Derek Barker.

CD - FRANK ZAPPA'S JUKEBOX

!

Of all the musicians and artists who grew up in the 1950s listening to records that helped forge successful recording careers in the 1960’s, Frank Zappa’s choices were the most eclectic, leftfield and downright bizarre. So while Frank listened to R‘n’B, Blues and Rock n’ Roll, in common with many of his later contemporaries (and often with local buddy Don Van Vliet - the artist later to be known as Captain Beefheart - in tow) he would equally find time for avant-garde jazz, modern classical and more New York doo-wop than surely was good for a young man still in his mid-teens. With extensive sleeve-notes by music historian Derek Barker, explaining the relevance and stories behind each track, and a 16 page booklet packed with rare photographs, this collection will prove a delight for both Frank Zappa fans and those interested in how the music of the past influenced the artists of the rock-era.

CD - FRANK ZAPPA'S CLASSICAL SELECTION

!
zappa selection

A man of hugely eclectic tastes, Frank Zappa was a lover of everything from Doo-Wop to Heavy Metal and from Jazz-Funk to New Wave. Indeed a radio show he produced for the BBC in 1980 found him spinning records by artists as varied as Frankie Valli, Howlin’ Wolf, The Channels, Lene Lovich, Wild Man Fisher,UK Subs, Traffic and The Rolling Stones. On that same Sunday evening more than 30 years ago, Zappa also played records by Edgar Varese and Igor Stravinsky, representing his love of modern classical music.
Varese was one of Zappa’s very earliest influences and after discovering the dissonant sounds that this French born composer created, he was hooked on a genre of music that for most of us is anything but easy listening. But while an acquired taste the tracks that fill this 2 disc compilation may be, the acquisition of such a taste is a rewarding journey with an even more rewarding destination.
Featuring nineteenth and twentieth century mavericks as diverse as Wagner, Holst, Ravel, Boulez, Stockhausen, Schoenberg,Penderecki, Harry Partch and John Cage – in addition to the aforementioned Stravinsky and Varese – this collection illustrates the impulse for many of Zappa’s own compositions and works as both an introduction to a style of music rarely heard outside of the most elite communities in the third millennium and as a guide to the music Frank Vincent took to his very heart and cherished throughout the major part of his tragically short life.
Including fully illustrated 16 page booklet with extensive notes by music historian Derek Barker, this delightful package finally reveals what it was that informed so much of Frank Zappa’s extraordinary music.

CD - U2 JUKEBOX

!
u2 jukebox

Never a band to shy away from namedropping their most beloved influences, U2 remain wholly proud of incorporating other styles and forms into their own unique sound - which has all but become a genre in its own rite. And the history of the group has been a trail of musical discovery for its four founder members, each of whom now boasts a musical knowledge and taste far wider than most of their contemporaries.
So while The Ramones and The Clash have been firm favourites since the very earliest practise sessions, B.B. King, Johnny Cash and Billie Holiday all entered the fray a little later. But memories too from the era when the lads were growing up are also represented here; Frank Sinatra was rarely off the gramophone in the Hewitt household during the 1960s and 70s, and each one of this extraordinary quartet still gets a tingle down the spine when hearing again that monster hit from the glorious summer of 1976, Peter Frampton’s ‘Show Me The Way’ - the song the band, then known as Feedback, opened their first two gigs with some 35 years ago. Elsewhere on this collection, David Bowie rubs shoulders with Chuck Berry, Allen Ginsberg co-exists with John Lee Hooker and Bob Dylan sits close to Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Roy Orbison.
Twenty-One classic tracks in all, every one of which has played its part in informing and inspiring Dublin’s finest sons to remain one of the finest bands the world has ever known.

CD – THE DOORS JUKEBOX

!
doors jukebox

When a band is as original and unique as the Doors were during their heyday, it is often less of a challenge to name those they have inspired than it is their own key influences. But there is one pivotal genre of music running in the background of numerous Doors classics: that of course, is the blues. Jim Morrison loved the dark recordings of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker almost as much as he did the novels of Huxley, Kerouac and Joyce, or the poetry of Rimbaud and Blake. And with Ray Manzerek growing up on the south side of Chicago, home of electric blues, the band had a common thread to indulge in their songwriting.
But co-existing on this compilation with the scorching blues records of the names above and many others from a similar impulse, are songs by Kurt Weill and George Gershwin, free jazz from Ornette Coleman and Thelonius Monk, and primal rock n’ roll performances by Elvis Presley. Doors member were heavily informed by these names and many others, and this selection acts as a fitting tribute to both a band who knew where to look for inspiration and a selection of artists who were so powerful in their chosen field they had the balls – albeit unknowingly - to influence one of the finest band this world has ever witnessed.

CD – PAUL MCCARTNEY’S JUKEBOX

!
paul mccartney

By far the finest musician within the Beatles, Paul McCartney also had the most eclectic taste in music.
Understandably and rightly so, he loved Rock & Roll and its early British counterpart Skiffle - the music of his youth - just as much as the others. But McCartney also had a huge knowledge and passion for the songs of the great American composers from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s and delighted too in RnB, Country, Jazz, Classical plus the compositions of Brian Wilson, the poetry of the Beat Generation, and in time, the then emerging avant-garde, which his song-writing partner was still insisting was French for bullshit.
This compilation brings together the songs and records that Paul McCartney has been inspired by most through his quite incredible life and career. Taking in many of the genres and styles he has enjoyed the most, this compilation offers a fascinating glimpse into what has rotated on Pauls record decks, CD players and quite possibly moved through his internet connection as well.
