THE SONGS HE DIDN'T WRITE: Bob Dylan Under The Influence

!

DUE TO THE HUGE SUCCESS OF THIS TITLE OUR PUBLISHER HAS GIVEN US A PROMOTIONAL DISCOUNT WHICH MEANS THIS TITLE IS NOW ONLY £8.00 PLUS POSTAGE IN THE UK

by ISIS editor Derek Barker

550 songs over 512-page, lavishly illustrated with 230 images.

ISIS is very pleased to be able to announce that Derek Barker’s book “The Songs He Didn’t Write: Bob Dylan Under The Influence” was voted as one of the ten best music books of 2009 by UNCUT.

Barker's book was also chosen as the third best music book of 2009 in Record Collector magazine.  “Songs...” was the only Dylan book to make either of the above charts.

Monumental chronicle of the songs which made Dylan tick and the ultimate Theme Time Radio Hour companion ... This marvellous exercise is testament to Barker’s dedication and knowledge of his subject ... revealing more about its illusive subject’s ways and workings than a shelf-load of variations and theories on the well-trodden story ... Indispensable. *****  Kris Needs – Record Collector

A well-researched, endlessly entertaining and Fascinating book **** Allan Jones – Uncut

Eighteen months in the making, “The Songs He Didn’t Write” contains detailed information about the 550 songs which Dylan has covered either in the studio or in concert from his early party gigs through to the present day.

Each entry catalogues when and where the song was performed, the year of the tour and the date and venue of the first and most recent performance. Also included is the background to the song, from whom Dylan might have learned it, and in most cases a short biography of the artist in question. Much more than just another Dylan book.  All Reviews

THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF BOB DYLAN

!

by Sean Egan

Bob Dylan's impact on popular music has been incalculable. Having transformed staid folk music into a vehicle for coruscating social commentary, he then swept away the romantic platitudes of rock n roll with his searing intellect. From the zeitgeist-encapsulating protest of Blowin in the Wind to the streetwise venom of Like a Rolling Stone , and from the stunning mid-sixties trilogy of albums Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde to Time Out of Mind, his stunning if world-weary comeback at the age of 56,

Dylan's genius has endured, underpinned by the dazzling turn of phrase that has made him the pre-eminent poet of popular music. Because Dylan s achievements have no equal, his career is the most chronicled in rock history. Here, Sean Egan presents a selection of the best writing on Dylan, both praise and criticism. Interviews, essays, features and reviews from Dylan intimates and scholars such as John Bauldie, Michael Gray, Nat Hentoff and Jules Siegel are interspersed with new narrative and reviews of every single album to create a comprehensive picture of the artist whose chimes of freedom still resound.

BOB DYLAN WRITINGS 1968 - 2010

!
writings and drawings greil marcus

by Greil Marcus

Greil Marcus weaves individual moods and moments into a brilliant history of their changing times. The book begins in Berkeley in 1968, and ends with a piece on Dylan's show at the University of Minnesota on election night 2008. In between are moments of euphoric discovery: from Marcus' sleeve notes for the 1967 Basement Tapes to his exploration of Dylan's reimagining of the American experience in 1997's Time Out of Mind. And rejection; Marcus's Rolling Stone piece on Dylan's album Self Portrait – often referred to as the most famous record review ever written – began with 'What is this shit?' and led to his departure from the magazine for five years. Marcus follows not only recordings but performances. books, movies, and all manner of highways and byways in which Bob Dylan has made himself felt in our culture. Together, the dozens of pieces collected here comprise a portrait of how, throughout his career, Bob Dylan has drawn upon and reinvented the landscape of American song, its myths and choruses, heroes and villains. They are the result of more than forty years' engagement between an unparalleled artist and a uniquely acute listener. 512 pages, paperback.

BOB DYLAN STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS 1962 - 1969

!
andy gill book

by Andy Gill

In this book, Andy Gill assess the circumstances behind Dylan's most famous songs, tracing the artist's progress from young tyro folkie to acclaimed protest singer, and through the subsequent changes which saw him invent folk-rock and transform rock'n'roll with symbolist poetry, before retreating into country-tinged conservatism just as his followers were engaged in the great psychedelic freak-show of the late 1960s. Even then, he couldn't help but innovate, introducing the world to another strain of popular music - country-rock - which would come to dominate the American charts through the next decade. Always one step ahead of the crowd, always pushing himself to extend the boundaries of his art, the Dylan of the 1960s remains a beacon of integrity to which fans and fellow musicians keep returning. This book covers every Dylan song on the following albums: Bob Dylan; Freewheelin' Bob Dylan; The Times They Are A-Changin'; Another Side of Bob Dylan; Bringing It All Back Home; Highway 61 Revisited; Blonde On Blonde; The Basement Tapes; John Wesley Harding; Nashville Skyline. 192 pages with 100 colour & b/w photographs. SHELTER FROM THE STORM

!
shelter-cover

by Sid Griffin

In the fall of 1975 and spring 1976, Bob Dylan led a travelling band of musicians around America on the two legs of the Rolling Thunder tour. Along for the ride were Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, David Blue, Kinky Friedman, T-Bone Burnett, Allen Ginsberg, Sam Sheppard, Mick Ronson, and dozens more musicians, friends, family and hangers-on. The circus was documented in the film “Renaldo and Clara”, the live album “Hard Rain”, and a TV concert special of the same name, while in between the two legs of the tour Dylan released the classic “Desire” album. It is this period of heightened creativity and personal drama that Dylan-authority, author, and musician Sid Griffin examines in ‘Shelter from the Storm’. Interviewing many of the tour’s participants including musicians Roger McGuinn, T-Bone Burnett, Kinky Friedman, Arlo Guthrie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, and tour manager Louie Kemp, Griffin mixes meticulous musical analysis into a gripping narrative in this definitive account the Rolling Thunder years.

PROPHECY IN THE CHRISTIAN ERA

!
(Hard to find - out of print- Private Publication)
by Jenny Ledeen (Peacebury Press, US, 1995)

US only paperback publication, 241 pages. A fairly academic volume, described by the author as a study of Bob Dylan's work from 1961 to 1967, comparing his use of enigma to teach ethics, and comparing him to Dante Aligheri and other poets. However, it raises some interesting points (describing Shelton for example as 'a treacherous witness and interpreter').
