TIME OUT OF MIND: THE LIVES OF BOB DYLAN (HARDBACK)

!

AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER PUBLISHED AUGUST 2013

by Ian Bell

The second and concluding volume of Ian Bell's study / biography of Bob Dylan (Once Upon A Time, being the first) is due out in August, 2013.

Publisher’s blurb... “By the middle of the 1970s, Bob Dylan's position as the pre-eminent artist of his generation was assured. The 1975 album "Blood on the Tracks" seemed to prove, finally, that an uncertain age had found its poet. Perverse or driven, Dylan refused the role. By the decade's end, the counter-culture's poster child had embraced conservative, evangelical Christianity. Fans and critics alike were confused; many were aghast. Still the hits kept coming. Then Dylan faltered. His instincts, formerly unerring, deserted him. In the 1980s, what had once appeared unthinkable came to pass: the 'voice of a generation' began to sound irrelevant, a tale told to grandchildren. Yet in the autumn of 1997 something remarkable happened. Having failed to release a single new song in seven long years, Dylan put out the equivalent of two albums in a single package. He called it "Time Out of Mind". So began the renaissance, artistic and personal, that culminated in 2012's acclaimed "Tempest". In the concluding volume of his groundbreaking study, Ian Bell explores the unparalleled second act in a quintessentially American career. It is a tale of redemption, of an act of creative will against the odds, and of a writer who refused to fade away. "Time Out of Mind" is the story of the latest, perhaps the last, of the many Bob Dylans. This one might yet turn out to have been the most important of them all.”

THE SONGS HE DIDN'T WRITE: Bob Dylan Under The Influence

!
Bob Dylan songs he didnt write book

by ISIS editor Derek Barker - 550 songs over 512-page, lavishly illustrated with 230 images.

Monumental chronicle of the songs which made Dylan tick and the ultimate Theme Time Radio Hour companion ... This marvellous exercise is testament to Barker’s dedication and knowledge of his subject ... revealing more about its illusive subject’s ways and workings than a shelf-load of variations and theories on the well-trodden story ... Indispensable. *****  Kris Needs – Record Collector

A well-researched, endlessly entertaining and Fascinating book **** Allan Jones – Uncut

Eighteen months in the making, “The Songs He Didn’t Write” contains detailed information about the 550 songs which Dylan has covered either in the studio or in concert from his early party gigs through to the present day.

Each entry catalogues when and where the song was performed, the year of the tour and the date and venue of the first and most recent performance. Also included is the background to the song, from whom Dylan might have learned it, and in most cases a short biography of the artist in question. Much more than just another Dylan book.

ISIS is very pleased to be able to announce that “The Songs He Didn’t Write: Bob Dylan Under The Influence” was voted as one of the ten best music books of 2009 by UNCUT.

The book was also chosen as the third best music book of 2009 in Record Collector magazine.  “Songs...” was the only Dylan book to make either of the above charts.

PROPHECY IN THE CHRISTIAN ERA

!
by Jenny Ledeen (Peacebury Press, US, 1995)

US only paperback publication, 241 pages. A fairly academic volume, described by the author as a study of Bob Dylan's work from 1961 to 1967, comparing his use of enigma to teach ethics, and comparing him to Dante Aligheri and other poets. However, it raises some interesting points (describing Shelton for example as 'a treacherous witness and interpreter').
