About
The Book:
After the phenomenal
success of the first ISIS Anthology (2001), (see below)
Chrome Dreams and ISIS now bring you "Anthology 2: 20 Years
Of ISIS".
As the title suggests,
this bumper 368-page book is published to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of ISIS magazine (in September 2005) and has
been compiled with a view to satisfying the needs of casual
fans and Dylan obsessive alike.
Combining the best
articles and interviews culled from 20-years of ISIS
Magazine’s back pages, this chronological collection can be
read cover to cover as a potted biography, or more
appropriately, simply dipped into and read as individual
essays.
Editor Derek Barker and
his team of experts have at their disposal, the ISIS
archive, which contains 20 years of interviews and research
material about Bob Dylan and the resulting book, which draws
from 120 issues of the magazine, is a treasure trove of
facts and information.
Like the magazines from
which they are taken, this anthology is an eclectic mix of
writings on Bob Dylan in which in-depth articles are
punctuated by stories of fans meeting their idol, or off the
wall tales of Bob Dylan out trick-or-treating or organizing
a prototype moustache before deciding to grow his own. It is
this pot-pourri of styles that has kept ISIS magazine so
popular for so many years and the resulting Anthology has
"something for everybody".
About
The Author:
Renowned authority on the
life and works of Bob Dylan, Derek Baker founded the
international Bob Dylan magazine ISIS in September 1985 and
has edited this highly respected journal uninterruptedly for
all of those twenty years. ISIS magazine is sold through
book and record stores worldwide and has subscribers in 32
countries.
Derek Barker first edited
(in book form) a collection of writings and interviews from
the back pages of ISIS in November 2001. 'ISIS: A Bob Dylan
Anthology' (Helter Skelter Publishing) received almost
universal rave reviews. It sold out a hardback edition and
two paperback printings. A revised edition of the book
(Helter Skelter Publishing 2004) remains in print.
Over the past two years,
Barker has contributed regularly to BBC Radio programs on
Bob Dylan and has been featured on the BBC World Service,
BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Northern Ireland, BBC Radio Scotland
as well as numerous local radio stations. He was recently
featured on the BBC 2 television program 'The Culture Show'
and he has also appeared on Channel 4s Breakfast News
talking about Bob Dylan.
Barker has had his
writings on Bob Dylan published in journals in England, the
USA and Japan. He has worked on three CD projects with his
current publisher, Chrome Dreams, writing the liner notes
for two of them, and has advised on, and appeared in, the
DVD documentary films 'Tales From a Golden Age: Bob Dylan
1941-1966' and 'After The Crash: Bob Dylan 1966-1978'.
Barker’s status as an expert on all things Dylan is such
that he regularly advises premier auction house Christie’s
(both in London and New York) on the authenticity of items
of Dylan memorabilia.

ABOUT
THE ANTHOLOGY

SORRY, THIS ITEM HAS
SOLD OUT
After selling out the
limited edition hardback and two paperback print runs,
the ISIS Anthology has been completely revised
and re-published by Helter Skelter.
This edition sold out
quickly but ISIS now has a limited quantity of unsold shop
returns on offer at half the cover price.
There are two completely
new chapters, “He’s Got a New One Out Now” and “Big Black
CDs”. The two chapters try to bring things up to date since
the original publication. The first covers the Dylan film
“Masked and Anonymous”, while the other looks at the recent
15 SA-CD releases.
Besides the two new
chapters, the whole Anthology has been reworked. This
includes correcting a few mistakes and typos and adding
information that has become known since the book’s original
publication in 2001. This new information has either been
introduced into the original text, or is presented as
footnotes that update the relevant chapters.
Due to the constraints
placed on me re the size of the original Anthology, I was
forced to make massive edits to the Ma and Pa Zimmerman
interview. Some of those edits would have been necessary
simply because the material was unworthy of publication. I
have however, reinstated almost 2,500 words of extremely
valid material and I am very happy that the ‘full’ interview
will now see the light of day.
Finally, the appendix has
been reworked and updated to include new releases since
2001, like “Love and Theft” and “Live 1975”. There is also a
massive revision of the bootleg section, which has been
extended from 50 to 75 entries. All other sections of the
appendix have been extensively revised to take account of
new books, etc.
The book, which has grown
by over 15,000 words and now weighs in at circa 150,000
words, is presented as a smaller size 13x20cm ‘B’ format
paperback. The extra text and smaller page format has
increased the page count by 100 pages to circa 352 pages. A
new, rather stunning cover, has also been used.
The original book was
reviewed in depth in these pages so I don’t intend repeating
that here. Suffice to say the book is now bigger, better,
and cheaper than ever before.
PREVIOUS REVIEWS
EXTRACTS....
A treasure trove of Bob
Dylan info, opinion and associated arcana
Andy Gill - Mojo
This is a CRACKERJACK
book. It gets its flavour from Derek's own enthusiasm for
and perspective on Dylan.
A bit like Grandma's
secret recipe fruitcake, which is stuffed full of goodies,
yet is wonderfully digestible. And you always want more… It
helps enormously that Derek writes well. His style is
accessible, engaging and inclusive of others. He brings
rigour and considerable expertise to bear… There is a total
absence of malice about his writing, as well as an utter
lack of arrogance.
Of past anthologies, many
might feel that John Bauldie's 1987 effort sets a pretty
formidable benchmark…. "ISIS a Bob Dylan Anthology" meets
and in some ways surpasses it.
Jim Gillan - Reviewer for
ISIS, Rock 'n Reel & Songbook
"It is the insider aspect
that particularly appeals…The Isis Anthology makes you want
to dig out the albums, which is the mark of a successful
music book."
Matt Bryden - Tangents
"Fanzine to magazine to
regular literary event…manages to remain both entertaining
and, in places, hugely evocative."
Mick Middles - Classic
Rock *****
"Derek Barker, an unsung
hero among Dylan chroniclers, finally gets his moment in the
spotlight, for an array of well-researched and intelligent
articles. If you're more than mildly obsessed with Bob, then
this is an essential purchase."
Peter Doggett - Record
Collector
Anyone thoroughly
absorbed in the study and pursuit of Bob Dylan will feel
completely at home in these densely detailed pages…There are
no articles here that any Dylanologist would consider
superfluous… Vignettes, are the order of the day, but these
are good Vignettes by and large, and this book is worth any
Dylan specialist's money.
