Brazil Series
New
Art to be shown in Demark, Autumn 2010
The National Gallery of
Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst) in Copenhagen will host a
major exhibition of Bob Dylan’s paintings in the autumn of
2010. The announcement was made September 15, 2009 by the
museum’s Director, Karsten Ohrt. The exhibition will feature
almost 100 works, including the world premiere of 30
large-format acrylic paintings from Dylan’s upcoming “Brazil
Series”, as well as many (circa 50-60) original paintings
from “The Drawn Blank Series”.
Schaffer’s
Autobiography
It is reported that Paul
Schaffer, who we believe first met Dylan during the latter’s
appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1979, has written his
autobiography, due for publication later this year. It is
said that the opening chapter is entitled “Dylan and Me”.
Schaffer later worked on Late Night With Letterman
television show, on which Dylan has appeared, and their
paths have crossed on several other occasions over the
years.
Schaffer has a wide musical
background, which includes co-writing ‘It’s Raining
Men’, a hit for The Weather Girls in 192 – it
reportedly sold over six million copies world-wide.

Christmas
Album Official Announcement
On August 25, 2009 Columbia
Records officially announced the release of Bob Dylan’s
Christmas album. The working title for the album, the news
of which was first made known on the ISIS website on
August 20, has been confirmed as “Christmas In The
Heart”. Columbia has also confirmed that our
predicted U.S. release date of October 13, 2009 is correct.
Columbia also confirm two of the songs already mentioned by
ISIS, ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’ and
‘Must Be Santa’, but also mentions ‘Winter
Wonderland’ and ‘Little Drummer Boy’
as being on the album. Columbia has stated that all of the
artist’s U.S. royalties from sales of the album will be
donated to the charity “Feeding America”. The press release
states: “Bob Dylan is also donating all of his future U.S.
royalties from this album to Feeding America in perpetuity”.
The statement goes on to
say: “Additionally, the artist is partnering with two
international charities to provide meals during the holidays
for millions in need in the United Kingdom and the
developing world, and will be donating all of his future
international royalties from “Christmas In The Heart”
to those organizations in perpetuity. Details
regarding the international partnerships will be announced
next week”.
Feeding America is the
United States leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Their
network members supply food to more than 25 million
Americans each year, including 9 million children and 3
million senior citizens. Their network of more than 200 food
banks serves all 50 states plus the Districts of Columbia
and Puerto Rico.
Bob Dylan commented: “It’s a
tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country
alone – 12 million of those children – often go to bed
hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next
meal is coming from. I join the good people of Feeding
America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food
security to people in need during this holiday season”.

Update
ISIS has now had an email
confirmation that Denny Freeman has indeed departed Bob
Dylan's tour band.

Charlie
Sexton To Rejoin Dylan?
According to Diane Scott of
the Continental Club, Charlie Sexton has rejoined Dylan’s
band, replacing Denny Freeman for Dylan's October tour. The
Continental Club is a renowned live music venue in Austin,
Texas and Diane Scott works as PR for the club. The club’s
newsletter, August 21, 2009, appears to confirm a story that
was picked up by ISIS a week ago. It seems that the
news has been confirmed by Denny Freeman who apparently told
Scott: “Well, at least it’s Charlie”. If the report is true,
then it seems that this change in the tour band came about
after Sexton joined Dylan for ten songs during the concert
at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. The current
line-up is the longest running since the so called Never
Ending Tour began in 19. ISIS has been unable to
confirm this story.
News of Sexton rejoining
Dylan at this juncture seems strange. In March 2009, Charlie
Sexton’s band the Arc Angels announced that they were
reforming and that they were excited about making a new
album, a DVD and a tour. Arc Angels’ band member Doyle
Bramhall even left Eric Clapton to reform the band. The Arc
Angels have extensive plans to tour in late 2009 and have
already opened shows for Eric Clapton in Great Britain &
Ireland.

CHRISTMAS
ALBUM UPDATE
A report has drifted across
here suggesting that the working title for the new album is
"Christmas in the Heart" and that the currently planned U.S.
release date is 13 October. This date coincides with Dylan's
Fall tour - to be precise with the first of three shows at
the Hollywood Palladium - but whether we will get to
hear Dylan singing any of these Christmas songs in
concert is another matter entirely. We assume that the album
is scheduled for 12 October release in the U.K. and much of
Europe but 9 October in Germany and Italy.
Of course, ISIS will be
stocking the CD.

Christmas album – more reports and rumours
It is said that the
selection and sequencing of the songs for Dylan’s mooted
Christmas album have been finalized, though no details have
yet been officially announced.
So far, ISIS has
identified five songs, O Little Town of Bethlehem,
Silver Bells, Must Be Santa, Here Comes Santa
and I’ll Be Home for Christmas and nobody has
suggested that any of these is wrong. In addition, there are
now reports and rumours that Frosty the Snowman and
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas are on the
album. We wait to see.
It is also understood that
Dylan will be appearing in a video for a single, though no
indication of what that single might be – perhaps Have
Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.
Finally, one source believes
that the proceeds from the album (and presumably any single)
will be going to charity but, if so, the charity has not yet
been named.
Any additional information
will be most welcome.

MORE ON
DYLAN'S CHRISTMAS ALBUM
There has been some feedback
following our reprinting of a new Dylan album, for which
many thanks.
It seems that this project
was being mooted some months back. It is a personal project
of Dylan himself rather than an idea put forward by his
record company. The sessions took place in May of this year
at Groove Masters studio in Santa Monica, for which the
Wikipedia entry reads:
Groove Masters is a
semi-private recording studio owned by Jackson Browne.
Located in Santa Monica, California, the studio has been the
setting for many of Browne's recordings. The head sound
engineer is Grammy-nominated Peter Dieter. The studio
occasionally opens its doors to old friends, such as David
Crosby, as well as new independent artists.
David Hidalgo is once again
reported to be among the musicians involved and, at one
stage, backing singers were considered but it isn't clear if
any will appear on the finished product. The album is said
to have been mixed and finished in June.
So far, five songs have been
mentioned, none originals. Two reported directly to ISIS
were "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" (the popular Christmas
carol with the affecting phrase, "The hopes and fears of all
the years are met in thee tonight") and "Silver Bells" (a
song associated with Bing Crosby). Three others have been
mentioned by another website, namely "Must Be Santa", "Here
Comes Santa Claus" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". A few
years back, "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" was reportedly
performed at a soundcheck for a Dylan concert, as was "The
First Noel".
Once again, additional
information is welcome:

Did Dylan
record an album in May (and was it a Christmas album)?
A month or so ago, there was
a rumour that, following his European tour earlier this
year, Dylan had gone into a studio to record another album.
This was surprising in itself, given that "Together Through
Life" had only just been released, but what was even more
surprising was the suggestion that this would be a Christmas
album. At the time, we could get no substantiation of the
story and, not wishing to spread a rumour for which there
was no additional information, chose not to include it in
ISIS magazine or on the ISIS website. In the hope of
receiving feedback/confirmation, we did, however, print this
rumour in our ISIS newsletter (June 2009). Since then, we
have received more snippets about this initial rumour. While
we cannot reveal the nature of, nor the source of, these
snippets, we now feel there are sufficient grounds to go
public.
We have also linked these
various bits and pieces of information to another, earlier,
rumour. Around the time that "Together Through Life" was
about to come out, it was said that its release had in fact
been brought forward from the originally slated date, namely
this coming autumn. We wondered why and now think we have
the answer.
We cannot guarantee that
these reports will prove to be accurate but this is the way
it seems to us:-
Dylan and Sony are planning
to release a Christmas album later this year. There is no
indication whether this album will consist of Christmas
standards, Dylan originals or a mixture of the two.
Anyone who can add further
substantiation to this story or can provide additional
information is invited to contact
ianwoodward9@aol.com.
Follow-up to
"No Direction Home"?
There have also been
indications that a project about the Dylan's Rolling Thunder
period is in the works as a follow-up to No Direction Home -
that is, as a TV film, a DVD and perhaps a CD release, too.

Another, rather surprising,
rumour has come to light - but it is only a rumour, if an
extremely interesting one. The rumour is that most of the
songs on “Together Through Life” were not written by Bob
Dylan alone but were co-written.
As is our normal practice,
we have tried to check this but without success - neither
confirmation nor denial. We mention the rumour now, without
that additional substantiation, because we seek information
to help confirm or refute it. Please contact
ianwoodward9@aol.com

TOGETHER
THROUGH WORDS – Part 2
A day or so ago, we reported
a rumour that Dylan had co-written most of the songs on the
new album. While we had faith in our original source and
therefore posted the rumour here, we had no supporting
confirmation. We have now received confirmation that Dylan’s
co-writer is Robert Hunter.
This collaboration is
believed to extend only to the lyrics. The music, with the
exception of a nod to Willie Dixon for one song, has been
provided by Dylan alone.
No details have been
confirmed as to which of the songs are co-written (and which
not) but it is believed that all the songs, except one, were
co-written by Dylan and [Grateful Dead lyricist] Hunter. Any
further information on this aspect would be most welcome
(contact:
ianwoodward9@aol.com).
It is somewhat strange that,
with the steady flow of pre-publicity over recent weeks,
there has been no mention of this Dylan-Hunter
collaboration. It may be that there was concern over the
possible reaction of press and fans alike, after their
previous collaborations (‘Silvio’ and ‘Ugliest Girl In The
World’ on “Down In The Groove”). However, that collaboration
seemed more one of chance (and to do with filling an album
during a dry period), while this seems closer to Dylan
writing with Jacques Levy for the “Desire” album.
TOGETHER THROUGH WORDS - Part 3
Almost as soon as we posted
Part 2 in this little saga, we got our hoped for third
source. Better than that, it was official in that it came in
the form of a Polish promo CD for
Beyond Here Lies Nothin'.
It is possible to make out that the composer credits and
they go to "(Bob Dylan, Robert Hunter)".

That only leaves one
question: how many songs were co-written? This has not been
made entirely clear but, as we said before, we believe that
all the songs on the new album except one are co-written.
The exception is said to be: "This Dream Of You".
The problem here is that
this is not congruent with the back story about the album.
That said that Dylan was asked to write a song for a the
film "My Own Love Song" and doing this encouraged him to
continue writing - or something like that. We're not
suggesting that this isn't true but why then isn't the film
song "Life Is Hard" the one written by Dylan alone? There
are explanations one could put forward but, for the moment,
we'll leave the question hanging.
Finally, we believe that,
contrary to previous reports, Benmont Tench is not on the
album.
Update 12 April, 2009
DYLAN'S
INFLUENCES: IT'S ALL THERE IN A BOOK
Library
Journal says "The Songs He Didn’t Write: Bob Dylan under the
Influence" is "meticulously researched and revelatory".
In the introduction to his
new book “The Songs He Didn’t Write”, author Derek Barker
wrote in great detail about how, at the end of the 190s, the
psychedelic Godfathers of jam, the Grateful Dead, “saved
Dylan’s career.” The American “Library
Journal” called Barker’s introduction
“revelatory”; at the time of writing they didn’t know just
how revelatory. Order your copy

ANOTHER
“ROLLING STONE” INTERVIEW
Dylan will be on the cover
of (American) Rolling Stone magazine, the first issue with a
cover date in May. The photo session took place near the
Parc Monceau in Paris, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on 7 April.
The same issue of Rolling Stone will include an interview
with Dylan, also conducted in Paris presumably on the same
date but not by one of their regular music commentators.
Both the photo session and the interview may have taken
place in a hotel.
PRE-RELEASE
GOINGS-ON
The French Rolling Stone
produced a 100-page Dylan special (Hors Serie Collectors
No.3) to coincide with Dylan’s two Paris concerts.
The 4th part of the
“Conversation with Bill Flanagan” will be available from 6
a.m. (New York time) on Monday 13 April through the CNN
website. The 5th part will be available on Monday, 20 April
2009 but the website to carry it has not been clarified.
Outside the United States, different arrangements may apply
for this Dylan exclusive.
A video for Beyond Here Lies
Nothin’ has been produced, consisting of more photographs by
Bruce Davidson, whose work is on the cover of the album.
This video will available on 20 and 21 April in the United
States through the Amazon website - and through other
websites in other countries.
The album will also be
available for radio broadcast in the week commencing 20
April, at around the time that brief TV adverts will be
shown in Britain (and maybe elsewhere).
A FURTHER
RUMOUR
A further rumour is that the
album artwork will include a picture by another Magnum
photographer, Josef Koudelka. One of Koudelka’s books is
entitled “Gypsies”, a title rumoured for Dylan’s new album
at one time. “Ruffians” was another title contender,
apparently, while someone suggested “Together Through Time”,
perhaps an inaccurate rendering of the final title but you
never know.
“THEME TIME
RADIO HOUR” UPDATE
It has been said that the
“Goodbye”show, the last in Series 3 will be longer than one
hour. As to whether there will be another series, this has
not yet been considered, let alone decided. Let’s hope there
is another series. If you have a view on this, let Sirius XM
know, not us.
End of update
I FEEL A
CHANGE COMING ON
There seems to be a lot of
discussion about the lyrics of this new song. Here's our
Wicked Messenger's take on them:
I Feel a change coming on
Well, I’m looking the world
over, looking far off into the east
And I see my baby coming,
she’s walking with the village priest
I feel a change coming on
and the last part of the day is already gone
We got so much in common, we
strive for the same old ends
And I just can’t wait, wait
for us to become friends
I feel a change coming on
and the fourth part of the day is already gone
Well life is for love and
they say that love is blind
If you wanna live easy,
baby, pack your clothes with mine
I feel a change coming on
and the fourth part of the day is already gone
Well now, what’s the use in
dreaming, you got better things to do
Dreams never did work for me
anyway, even when they did come true
You are as aurous as ever,
baby, you can start a fire
I must be losing my mind,
you’re the object of my desire
I feel a change coming on
and the fourth part of the day is already gone
I’m listening to Billy Joe
Shaver and I’m reading James Joyce
Some people they tell me,
I’ve got the blood of the land in my voice
Everybody got all the money,
everybody got all the beautiful clothes
Everybody got all the
flowers, I don’t have one single rose
I feel a change coming on
and the fourth part of the day is already gone
We have no idea how accurate
or otherwise these will turn out to be. The "fourth part of
the day" is biblical in origin, incidentally.
Theme Time
Radio Hour - Series 3
Series 3 of Theme Time Radio
Hour appears to be drawing to a close. This week's programme
( April onwards) is "Clearance Sale" and it has also been
described as "Big Clearance Sale". Also, a continuity
announcer in the States apparently said that this show would
be "Goodbye" but we believe he got mixed up and "Goodbye"
will come the week after next (15 April onwards). A bigger
than usual "Clearance Sale" followed by a "Goodbye"
indicates that Series 3 is coming to an end, with 25
original shows, the same number as Series 2. But will it be
"Goodbye" or "Au revoir"?

We are sorry to inform you
that there will be no fan magazine (Desolation Row / ISIS)
allocation for the concert at the Roundhouse. Anyone wanting
tickets for this concert should visit
bobdylan.com and
follow their instructions. It is our understanding that
these tickets are standing only and that all seats for this
concert have been reserved for corporate use.

Bob Dylan and his Band will
perform a special show on April 26, 2009 at Roundhouse in
London, England. Tickets will go on sale this Wednesday,
March 25. All purchases will require a password, which will
be posted on the tour page of
bobdylan.com before
tickets go on sale, along with the link to the venue's site
for ticket purchase. There will be a limit of two tickets
per customer. Please visit this page as more details will be
posted.
This is an extraordinary
arrangement for a UK show since the concert is being driven
by the record company and Bob’s people rather than the
Promoters. The promoters will call John Baldwin today with
further details, including whether there is any sort of
"fan" allocation.

A further
update about the new Bob Dylan studio album “Together
Through Life” with other pre-release activities.
For those of you who haven’t
already seen it, the first installment of an interview
conducted by Bill Flanagan is currently posted on
bobdylan.com.
This is the first installment of a five or six part
interview which looks like running weekly up to the release
of the album. The interview is also likely to be aired
extensively via other media.
‘Beyond Here Lies Nothing’,
which is seen as the focal track from the album, will be
aired on the radio. This track is also likely to be the
promotional video for the album.
The album will come in 3
formats–
(1). Standard single CD
version, in jewelcase with 4-panel booklet.

2. Life Is Hard
3. My Wife's Home Town

10. It's All Good
(2). Deluxe limited edition
version presented in a slipcase containing the standard CD
album in jewelcase plus a DVD (in a slip-sleeve) featuring
an interview with Roy Silver. This interview with Dylan’s
first manager is an outtake from the “No Direction Home”
documentary. Included in the interview is the original demo
version (audio only) of ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’. There will
also be a CD (in a slip-sleeve) featuring the ‘Friends and
Neighbours’ episode of Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour. Also
included in the package will be a sticker and poster
featuring the Bruce Davidson album cover image.
The deluxe version of the
album, i.e. the DVD and Theme Time extras, will not be
available as an iTunes download.
(3). 2x 10-gram virgin vinyl
LPs. This vinyl set will also include a CD version of the
album.

Bob Dylan in
Trouble with Neighbors Over Stinky Portable Potty
A couple in Malibu is
complaining that their neighbor, rock poet Bob Dylan, has
permanently parked a stinky portable potty next to the
property line they share with him.
Cindy and Dave Emminger
wrote a letter to a local weekly newspaper publicly
complaining that the City of Malibu has not helped them
address the problem.
The Emmingers said Dylan
rented a "toxic, hazardous, carcinogenic chemical toilet,"
and "plopped it down next to their home." The toilet spews
horrible chemical odors into their home, the couple said.
"This toilet is apparently
intended by my neighbor, Bob Dylan, to be a permanent
fixture on his property," the Emmingers complained.
The city's code enforcement
staff has apparently been unable to force Dylan to remove
the potty.
A spokesman for Dylan could
not be reached for comment Sunday, and the City of Malibu
routinely refuses to comment on specific code enforcement
issues.
Dylan has lived in Malibu
for decades, where he has put together an equestrian
compound by buying up several adjacent properties in an
older section of the city, not far from Zuma beach.

DYLAN'S NEW
STUDIO ALBUM (Round-up of the facts as we know them)
March 15, 2009
We are expecting the
official announcement of Bob Dylan's new studio album on
Monday (16 March) when, presumably, all will be revealed.
Meanwhile, we thought it might be useful to draw together
what we have heard to date and to see what gets confirmed
and what turns out to be wrong..
>
The album title is Together Through Life
>
The release date in Europe will be Monday, 27 April (though
it may be available on Friday,24 April in some territories)
>
The release date in North America will be Tuesday, 2 April
>
It will come in three formats: a regular 1-CD version; a
limited edition 2-Disc version; and a 1-LP vinyl release
>
There is no information regarding the extras in the 2-Disc
version but there are rumours. These include the second disc
being a DVD, possibly of interview out-takes from No
Direction Home and an audio track of an unreleased early
1960s' song - but these are just unsubstantiated rumours
>
The cover artwork is a photograph by Bruce Davidson
>
There are ten tracks on the album, of which nine song titles
are known: Beyond Here Lies Nothing; Life Is Hard; My Wife's
Hometown; Forgetful Heart; Shake Shake Mama; I Feel A Change
Comin' On; If You Ever Go To Houston; This Dream of You; and
It's All Good.
>
A promotional video is expected to go with the new release,
though no details have been forthcoming. You may care to
check our speculation in the final paragraph of "Additional
Information About The New Album", below.
>
The musicians on the album include, David Hidalgo (Los
Lobos) on accordion and possibly Mike Campbell and Benmont
Tench (Heartbreakers) on guitar and keyboards. These
musicians join the core of Dylan's current touring band.
>
The impetus for the new album came from Dylan writing and
recording a song for a film entitled My Own Love Song
(again, there is information on this below)
>
An extra London concert, possibly in North London on Sunday,
26 April, is expected to be announced soon, too, and this
concert is believed to be linked to the release of the new
album.
ISIS will be accepting
advanced orders for the new album soon.
New Studio Album - Update
March 14, 2009
It is now strongly
rumoured that the new Bob Dylan studio album is to be called
"Together Through Life". The album will be
released in three formats, Vinyl record, Single CD and a
two-disc CD with bonus DVD. The release date is scheduled
for the last week in April. A full press release is expected
early next week.

Pre-gig
Musical Get Together, Dublin, May 6, 2009
On May 5 and May 6, 2009 Bob
Dylan appears at the O2 Arena, (formerly The Point Depot) in
Dublin. If you are looking for somewhere to meet like-minded
Dylan fans during the day on Wednesday May 6 before the gig
then look no further … long time ISIS subscriber John
Roberts has organised a gathering at “The Scene“, a great
venue bar in the centre of Dublin, in Stephens Green.
Kent Duchaine, a Minnesota
Blues Minstrel, will perform during the daytime get
together. Kent, who has backed blues greats such as Hubert
Sumlin, Boogie Woogie Red, Luther Tucker, and Eddie Burns,
has also opened for Bukka White and shared the bill with
Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker and Howling Wolf.
The gathering starts at 12
noon at ‘The Scene’, South Kings St, Stephens Green, Dublin
2, on the corner, below Dunnes Stores. All this and one of
the best pints of Guinness in Ireland too! Admission is just
5 Euros, payable on the door.

New Dylan
Album
As trailed in ISIS Magazine
(see The Wicked Messenger #6649 for January 4, 2009), a
completely new Bob Dylan album is in the can. Our
understanding is that the album was recorded last October in
California (maybe with the recording sessions starting
slightly earlier than that). The sequencing of the tracks
was completed in January and the album is expected to
contain ten tracks.
Jeff Rosen has brought the
finished album to Europe for listening sessions in various
cities including London, Munich and Oslo. These “listenings”
were mainly for sales and marketing staff at Sony. We must
assume that similar sessions have taken place in the United
States. Several different titles have been put forward for
the album but, for the most part, these seem to be little
more than internet babble and at the time of the listenings
(mid February) no title had been decided upon. At one time,
it was suggested that the album would be released in the
autumn, then a release date in May 2009 was mentioned but it
seems that the release has now been brought forward to the
last week of April, to coincide with later stages of Dylan’s
forthcoming European tour. There are strong rumours about
the circumstances in which the album came about (See entry
for “My Own Love Song” below). There are also rumours that
the musicians on the album are not all from the current
touring band.
Meanwhile, we will leave you
to speculate on the coincidence of any additional London
concert date (April 26) and the release of a new album. We
would suggest that you check the ISIS website regularly for
further information.
My Own Love
Song
Directed by Olivier Dahan,
“My Own Love Song”, which finished shooting in Louisiana in
early December 200, is a road movie staring Renée Zellweger
and Forest Whitaker. Co-written and directed by Kristin
Gore, the film, a melodrama that flirts with comedy, traces
the trip to Memphis made by a former singer confined to a
wheelchair and one of her close friends, a fireman who has
suffered an accident at work. Filming began in October in
Kansas and Louisiana. It seems that Bob Dylan was approached
to provide the soundtrack to this film and the story goes
that when he went into the studio to record, he was so
impressed with what he had he decided to record his own new
album.
Additional Information About The New Album
There are several additional
pieces of information about the new album. One is that Dylan
recorded thirteen songs in all, of which ten are expected to
be on this release. Speculatively, this would leave
out-takes for use in “My Own Love Song”, but
nothing more has been heard regarding Dylan’s involvement
with this film.
Mike Campbell (of the
Heartbreakers) and David Hidalgo (of Los Lobos) are amongst
the musicians on the new album. These two guitarists are
said to have worked with what has been described as the
nucleus of Dylan’s tour band. The Heartbreakers’ keyboard
player Benmont Tench is also rumoured to have played on the
album.
There is also speculation of
a video to go with the album release, but there are no
details as yet. Of course, that rumoured animation-video
prepared for ‘Mississippi’ (from “Tell
Tale Signs”) never saw the light of day, so perhaps
that could be used – who knows? See previous post below.
I Don't
Believe You - You're a Liar
It has been brought to our
attention that there is a story circulating on various
internet forums stating that Bob Dylan's new album features
him covering his own songs! This item, which was supposedly
circulated by Reuters, is totally unfounded. A search of
Reuters website will confirm that no such news item was ever
listed by them.
Record

Under The Influence" 5 stars
Full details regarding the
book can be found
HERE
The Songs He Didn’t Write:
Bob Dylan Under The Influence by Derek Barker
Monumental chronicle of the
songs that made Dylan tick; the ultimate Theme Time Radio
Hour companion.
This is so much more than
just another tome to throw on the ever-growing pile of Dylan
books; more a brilliantly-entertaining launch-pad into the
sometimes weird and often wonderful canon of wildly-diverse
music which has propelled the man into performing a vast
number of sometimes unlikely cover versions at studios,
shows, soundchecks and even late 50s front rooms.
This marvellous exercise is
testament to Barker’s dedication and knowledge of his
subject, born out of 23 years editing foremost Dylan
fanzine, Isis, and years of research, revealing more about
its illusive subject’s ways and workings than a shelf-load
of variations and theories on the well-trodden story. Though
not the intention, Barker has also provided the perfect
companion to Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour, which has
featured many of these songs, giving dates, chart placings
and artist backgrounds along with where Dylan covered them
and crucial human commentary element.
The earliest entry is
Dylan’s first recorded appearance with a couple of mates in
Minnesota: an eight-song rock’n’roll/doo wop medley cut onto
three 7s on Christmas Eve 1956. The near-500-page book takes
the encyclopaedic format to document hundreds of songs,
ranging from expected inclusions such as Woody Guthrie and
the basement tapes, to surprises the likes of Mungo Jerry’s
In The Summertime, The Beatles’ Yesterday, 1992’s return
tribute to Hendrix by performing Dolly Dagger in Australia,
and the immortal shock encores of The Clash’s London Calling
during the November 2005 Brixton Academy residency. Appendix
One lists songs which Dylan played at anywhere from gigs and
studios, to friends’ apartments during specific years from
1956 onwards, while the frustration of craving to hear
inclusions such as the 1990 version of Little Feat’s Willin’
may require bootleg-hunting, so relevant CDs are listed in
Appendix Two. Indispensable. «««««

Club Date In Sweden
Rumours are emerging that
Dylan may play a small club date in Sweden prior to the
commencement of the Spring European tour. This date could
take place on March 22 at the 00 capacity Debaser Medis in
Stockholm. This is the same venue that Dylan played prior to
the start of his 2007 tour.

Sirius XM
Avoid Filing For Bankruptcy
The New York times reported
(February 11, 2009) that Sirius XM had hired Joseph A.
Bondi, a bankruptcy lawyer with Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett
to prepare for possible bankruptcy filing. At the time of
reporting the news, The New York Times was very hopeful that
a backer or buyer could be found.
Less than a week later,
Billboard.biz reported that Liberty Media, whose interests
include QVC, DirecTV and IAC, will invested $530 million to
keep Sirius XM on the air. It seems that Liberty will
immediately pump $250 million into Sirius XM to avoid them
filing bankruptcy. Assumedly this will allow the
continuation of Theme Time Radio Hour.

Co-op ad
The Co-operative Group is to
launch its £10m re-branding campaign with a two-and-a-half
minute commercial during Coronation Street.
It is believed to be the
second time a brand has taken up the entire middle ad break
during the popular ITV1 soap opera. In 2004, McCain rolled
out a three-minute ad during Coronation Street to celebrate
its 25th anniversary. The TV execution, by McCann Erickson,
will make its debut on Monday 16 February at approximately
7:40pm.
A 60-second ad will
subsequently run for four-weeks, before returning to screens
in July and August. The ad ends with the strap line, ‘Good
for everyone'. The TV ad featuring Bob Dylan's song ‘Blowin'
in the Wind', shows a child blowing the seeds from a
daffodil clock and the seeds fly across the globe. The ad
then displays several different scenes depicting the
Co-operative's charitable work in the community.

Bob Dylan
and Paul James 2008
Toronto-based guitar player Paul James joined Dylan at his
London, Ontario
concert last night, November 11, 200. James has played with
Dylan on several other occasions, but this time he replaced
both Freeman and Kimball onstage for the first five songs. A
rumour that James might be being considered as a new band
member was reported by Ian Woodward in Wicked Messenger
#6610 dated 12 Oct, 200. The times they could be a-changin'.

Dylan, makes the formal induction, calling the folk singer

Lightfoot thanks everybody from his parents to Ian and
Sylvia Tyson to band mates and especially Dylan who, he
says, "taught me how to write lyrics." Watch

Williams, Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Leadbelly

European tour dates have been settled for a while but the
dates in Spain have taken a while to sort out. Though
uncertain as to whether final contracts have been signed in
all cases, our
Wicked Messenger
believes the position to be as follows:
26 May, Reykjavik / 2 May,
Odense / 30 May, Stavanger / 1 June, Helsinki / 3 June, St.
Petersburg / 4 June, Tallinn / 5 June, Vilnius / 7 June,
Warsaw / 9 June, Ostrava / 10 June, Vienna / 11 June,
Salzburg / 13 June, Varazdin / 15 June, Trento / 16 June,
Bergamo / 1 June, Chatillon, near Aosta / 19 June, grenoble
/ 20 June, Toulouse / 22 June, Andorra / 23 June, Zaragoza /
24 June, Pamplona / 27 June, Vigo / 2 June, Gredos / 1 July,
Cuenca / 2 July, Alicante / 4 July, Lorca / 5 July, Jaen / 6
July, Arganda del Rey, near Madrid / July, Jerez de la
frontera / 10 July, Merida / 11 July, Oeiras, near Lisbon
Compared with our previous
listings, some of the dates in Spain have changed and and
another city has been added. In Spain and possibly
elsewhere, there may have been changes to venues.

THE NEXT
“BOOTLEG SERIES” RELEASE
This was included by Ian
Woodward in the paper version of the ISIS Newsletter, sent
out on Wednesday 9 April, 200.
For some
time now, traces of rumour have been accumulating that,
between them, suggest Legacy Records will be releasing
another in the “Bootleg Series” later this year. In itself,
this may not be too surprising but it seems that, like the
very first in the “Bootleg Series”, this will be a “(rare
and unreleased)” issue. This forthcoming album has not yet
appeared on the Sony schedules but a September release is
anticipated, subject only to the usual unforeseen delays.
This is expected to be a double–CD of mainly
officially-unreleased studio material that, chronologically
speaking, will overlap with the original “Volumes 1-3”
release.
Dylan’s
Canadian and European Tour 200
From a
variety of sources, I have pieced together the likely
itinerary and schedule of Dylan’s forthcoming Canadian and
European tour. I must stress that, as far as is known, no
contracts have been signed for the European leg, so some
details could very well change. Frankly, this list is a
mixture of report, rumour and reasoned supposition.
Nevertheless, I believe it to be as well-founded as could be
at this point in time.

Blanchett wins Globe for Dylan role
AUSTRALIAN actress Cate
Blanchett won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress for
her role in the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There.
Blanchett was not in Hollywood to hear the news of her award
but said: "I wish circumstances would allow me to be there.
As this is a true ensemble piece, I share this totally with
Christian Bale,
Marcus Carl Franklin, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere
and Ben Whishaw
[the other actors who played incarnations of Dylan in the
biopic]. And, of course, none of this would be possible
without the great man himself. Bob Dylan, wherever you are,
whoever you are, I thank you deeply."

photo exhibition currently running in Edinburgh
The exhibition titled Hard
Rain - Remaking a World Gone Wrong which is described as
'stunning soul-searching images from around the globe
reflecting mankind's destructive impact on our planet ,
inspired by Bob Dylan's potent lyrics.' Our visit to the
exhibition made us reevaluate the prescient imagery of a
song written in 1963 by the young Bob Dylan. The exhibition
is on until Thursday 31st. January in the Fossil Garden at
the Royal Botanic Garden, Inverleith Row, Edinburgh from
10am. until 4-00pm daily and is free. The Garden is also
very fine with a good cafe!

There is

t-shirt now on sale on Michael Gray’s blog (at
http://bobdylanencyclopedia.blogspot.com/),
following the one that sold out in 2006. Again the new one
is black high-quality cotton, again there’s the same
understatedness to it - no writing, plain black back -
but this time the image is silver instead of white (and the
silver does not go grungy in the wash), and the sizes
available are Small, Large of Extra Large. Photo and details

Getting
"Theme Time Radio Hour" on your computer
XM Radio is available via
AOL (America On Line) on the internet but, outside of the
United States, it is not always a straightforward process to
find the link. Searches sometimes get you referred back to
your own domestic AOL home page. ISIS has been told that
this is the URL you need:
http://music.aol.com/radioguide/xm_radio_guide
Scroll down the list of XM
channels, past the ones with an > at the start, until you
get to the printed list. Scroll down the printed list
looking for XM Deep Tracks (also called XM 40) and XM The
Village (also called XM15). "Theme Time Radio Hour" is
broadcast on (1) XM Deep Tracks, starting at 10.00 a.m. ET
on Wednesdays, and (2) XM The Village, starting at 12 noon
ET on Wednesdays. You will have to time-shift for your own
time zone to get the programme. There are various "encore"
broadcasts on both channels during the week. Also, it is
broadcast on XMX, the XM exclusives channel (also called
XM2), all day on Wednesdays.
Let us know how you get on.
Also, we'd welcome details of the "encore" broadcast times
(as there appears to be conflicting information on these);
we can then let others know.

THE BEST OF BOB DYLAN'S THEME TIME RADIO HOUR
Available to order now, full details

"DREAM DYLAN LIVE" on BBC Radio
The Wicked Messenger reports -
On Saturday, 6 October 2007 at .00 pm BST, BBC Radio 2 will
broadcast
"Dream Dylan Live",
a compilation of 11 live Dylan tracks from across the years,
introduced by Bob Harris.
According to the BBC, four of these tracks have not been
previously available (officially at least) but only two of
these "rarities" are known for certain. The BBC has made it
clear that
Groom Still Waiting At The Altar
will be from San Francisco on 15 November 190, with Mike
Bloomfield on guitar.
Blowin' in the Wind
is another rarity and this may be from the Carnegie Hall
concert of 26 October 1963. Although the BBC publicity has
been unspecific (and occasionally inaccurate), it is thought
that
Only A Pawn In Their Game
and
Love Sick
are the two other "rarities", though no dates are given for
these.
As for the rest, dates are given but a couple are clearly
incorrect:
The Times They Are A-Changin'
(1964),
Mr Tambourine Man
(1970 ????),
Like A Rolling Stone
(1974),
Maggie's Farm
(1965),
All Along The Watchtower
(195????),
To Make You Feel My Love
(199) and
Things Have Changed
2000).
It isn't clear whether
"Dream Dylan Live"
will be available on the internet or on the BBC's "Play
Again" feature.

DYLAN IN NASHVILLE STUDIO FOR TWO DAYS
Friday's issue of THE TENNESSEAN carried the news that Dylan
spent two days at the Sound Emporium Recording Studio in
Nashville this week. On Monday, 17 September, he "did
some tracking" (presumably
audio recording) and on Tuesday, 1 September, he
"shot a video .. for 'Hard Rain', a benefit for UNICEF".
While we have no inside information on this "tracking"
session, it is possible that it was in connection with the
Hank Williams tribute album being co-ordinated by Dylan - as
reported on 13 July 2007 in
The Wicked Messenger
#211 (in
ISIS
# 134, page ). Similarly, we have no inside knowledge on
"Hard Rain" but UNICEF's 2007 International Children's Day
of Broadcasting takes place on 9 December, with the theme,
"The World We Want", so perhaps that's it. If not, we are
pleased to publicise the UNICEF event here anyway.

Drawn Blank
On
Sunday, October 2, the first ever exhibition of Bob Dylan's
artwork will open at Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, in Chemnitz,
Germany.
Exclusively for this exhibition, Bob Dylan has produced more
than 200 remarkably intense color variations on pictorial
motifs from a book of drawings and sketches done from 199 to
1992, which were published in 1994 under the title Drawn
Blank by Random House.
In the
book's preface, Dylan explained that these works were
intended as sketches for paintings which he eventually
planned to complete. These now fully realized works -
photo-lithographs transferred to deckle-edged paper - have
been stunningly reworked by the artist in watercolor and
gouache and will be displayed for the first time in
Chemnitz.
When
asked how Chemnitz came to be the venue for "The Drawn Blank
Series" exhibition, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz Director Ingrid
Moessinger explained, "I first came across Bob Dylan's book
of drawings at an historical exhibition about Bob Dylan at
The Morgan Library & Museum in New York. I went straight out
and bought my own copy and immediately began to track down
the originals."
Bob Dylan commented, "I was fascinated to learn of Ingrid's
interest in my work, and it gave me the impetus to realize
the vision I had for these drawings many years ago." He
added, "If not for this interest, I don't know if I even
would have revisited them."
The
exhibition will run from 2 October 2007 to 3 February 200

The Ronson Re-version of "Most Likely ..."
The
Wicked Messenger reports that the video for the Mark Ronson
re-mix version of Most Likely You Go Your Way will be
premiered exclusively in Britain on Channel 4 on 13
September. The video reportedly contains: 1) at least four
people playing Dylan, shot obliquely; 2) some Dylan-related
references - almost in-jokes; and 3) Wyclef Jean as a soul
singer. The Ronson re-mix track itself will not appear on
DYLAN, neither on the 3-CD set nor the 1-CD distillation
[contrary to reports seen elsewhere] but may be on a bonus
disc, with Dylan's original, but only on early production
run(s).

Mark Ronson Re-mix of "Most Likely You Go Your Way"

full version will be aired first on Wednesday 1 August,

Dylan at Newport release
This
week, the Expecting Rain website carried the two-week-old
Dylan
Digest
report about the Dylan at Newport release, which is
perfectly fine. Unfortunately, this came with a comment that
it will be the next "Bootleg Series" release and a DVD+CD.
We wish to make it clear that this additional information
did not come from us. Karl-Erik has kindly amended the
Expecting Rain entry after this was pointed out to him.
It has also been brought to our attention that other
websites are now reporting that this release will be
"Bootleg Series Volume " and are stating that this
information has come from ISIS Magazine's Dylan Digest.
With
regards to Dylan at Newport, our present belief is that the
item will be released as part of a "Columbia Performances"
series.
To read our original posting of July, see the final
item on this page. The information for this item was
extracted from Ian Woodward's The Wicked Messenger in
