Bob Dylan: Carnegie Chapter Hall 1961 On CD

Released in the UK on CD by BDA Records in February 2012 (but available NOW from ISIS), “Bob Dylan: Carnegie Chapter Hall 1961” is a record of Dylan’s first proper New York concert. The concert, which took place on the evening of November 4, 1961, was staged at the Chapter Hall, a small rehearsal space in the celebrated Carnegie Hall on Seventh Avenue.

Just nine days after signing with Columbia Records, Dylan performed 22 songs at the Chapter Hall concert. The first seven songs from this performance came into circulation among collectors some years ago. Five additional songs appeared in December 2004 and a further two (‘Talking Merchant Marine’ and ‘Talking New York’) turned up in May, 2008. All of the available material has been pulled together for this release. However, one of the available tracks, Woody Guthrie’s ‘This Land is Your Land’ is not included. I can only imagine this is because that track has already been officially released on “No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series Vol. 7”.

This CD will be available from ISIS Magazine from January 1, 2012.  Full details HERE

Dylan on Vinyl

As previewed in a previous issue of ISIS Magazine, the LeftField Media albums “Folksingers Choice” and “Studs Terkel’s Wax Museum” are to be released on vinyl. Licensed by LeftField Media, these two LPs are released in the UK on the “Let Them Eat Vinyl” label. Both will be packaged in gate-fold sleeves and will feature the liner notes that were included with the CD release.

Although these albums are not limited editions as such, they will be limited by the fact that there will probably only be one pressing of these titles and as such they are likely to quickly become collectors items.

Both these titles will be available from ISIS Magazine in January, 2012  Full details HERE

Dylan Project On Tour

The Dylan Project are back on the road. Take four of Britain's most talented folk-rock musicians and a unique singer, add the repertoire of a genius, and you've got the recipe for a dream band.

The musicians in question are PJ Wright (slide and electric guitars, pedal steel) Gerry Conway (drums and percussion) Phil Bond (keys) Dave Pegg (bass) and the singer is Steve Gibbons. As The Dylan Project, they present an exhilarating tribute to the work of arguably the greatest postwar songwriter in the English language.

If you've not seen the Dylan Project, treat yourself, it is well worth it.

Fan Ticket Allocation for The London Shows

Most of you will have been notified in our previous email of today that Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler will be laying on some extra shows at the end of the forthcoming European tour. These will all be at the lovely Hammersmith Apollo on November 19th, 20th and 21st. There will be standing on the floor (£65) and seating in the various balcony tiers (£75 front balcony with only 390 seats, and £70 all other seats). There will be a Mark Knopfler pre-sale on Tuesday, September 20th and a bobdylan.com pre-sale probably at the same time. UK fans are being offered similar through Desolation Row and ISIS.

Again, the Promoters have generously allowed us an allocation of good seats (more than we were offered for Nottingham and Manchester). There are only 390 seats in the best balcony, we only have 100 of those to offer plus 100 of the front rows in the next balcony up – still extremely good seats. We will not be doing standing tickets for these shows.

Tickets will be limited to 2 per show per applicant. By request, tickets can only go to UK fans so I can’t help the overseas. Tickets will go rapidly. What you need to do is email johnabaldwin@btinternet.com telling him what you want. John will reply by Sunday evening to let you know whether you’ve been lucky and, if you have, tickets will be reserved for you and you will be emailed a booking form. If you are unlucky, you will still have a chance to get good tickets through the other pre-sales, but note that they won’t have anything better to offer.

I am trying to ensure that this message is released to Desolation Row subscribers at the same time as ISIS notifies their subscribers. The allocation will be open to both and nobody will get priority.

So, if you only want standing tickets, we can’t help ... go through the venues/ticketing agents. If you want seats then you might as well try us first and use the other methods as back up next week. £75 tickets will be allocated first unless you tell us that you want one at £70. Please state that you’re prepared to accept a £70 ticket (remember, they are still excellent seats). For those doing all 3 nights, we’ll try to ensure that you get a £75 ticket for one show at least. Sorry about this; it’s entirely out of our control. If Mr Dylan tours the UK again and if it’s a solo tour, then we can confidently predict that normal service will then be resumed.

Dylan / Knopfler at the HMV Apollo, Hammersmith, London.

After several months of being asked by the promoter not to publicize shows in London we are now in a position to confirm that Saturday November 19, Sunday, 20 and Monday 21, 2011 will see the Bob Dylan / Mark Knopfler tour at the HMV Apollo in Hammersmith, London.

For these concerts the venue will be standing downstairs and seated (1,924 seats) in the circle. Again, John at Desolation Row Promotions has kindly secured “fan” tickets from the promoter for subscribers to ISIS Magazine. The promoter has allowed us a larger allocation for these concerts. Tickets for these concerts should go on sale to the public some time next week. The Desolation Row / ISIS presale will be announced very shortly. WATCH THIS SPACE.

July 15th 2011

Several people have queried the Monday 5am start time for the sale of tickets to the general public in the UK. You will see below that we originally stated that the sale of tickets would commence at the more civilized time of 9am on Monday July 18 – this was the time given to us by the promoter – however, we have since heard talk that some agents may have tickets available from as early as 5am. Whilst I doubt this is correct, we decided to give out this earlier time just in case! With so many Internet sellers these days it is almost impossible to give a definitive time for anything. Gone are the days when you queued outside the venue and tickets went on sale when the doors opened.

Pre-Sale Ticket Allocation for UK - All Gone

July 15th 2011

If you applied for tickets and received an email stating that these have been reserved for you and you have since received a booking form, then you will get tickets. Please complete your forms ASAP and send your cheques off to John. If you have not received a booking form by now, then unfortunately your request arrived too late!

John and Derek would like to wish those of you that were not successful in the “fan” pre-sale the best of luck with getting your tickets through the venues / agents. Tickets for all shows are scheduled to go on general sale on Monday at 5 am.

The Autumn European Tour

Many of you will know already that the European Tour dates have been announced. Bobdylan.com wanted to be the first to make an announcement although I’ve known the full UK and half the European details for some while. First of all, look at the dates; for the UK shows I’ve added some extra details. Note that all shows will be double-headers with Mark Knopfler although we don’t know the order of performance yet.

October 6th 2011, The O2, Dublin, Ireland

October 8th 2011, Braehead Arena Glasgow, Scotland

October 9th 2011, Braehead Arena, Glasgow, Scotland Glasgow is standing with seats to the side and rear of the standing section

October 10th 2011, Manchester Evening News Arena, Manchester, England Manchester is all seated

October 11th 2011, Capital FM Arena, Nottingham, England Nottingham is all seated

October 13th 2011, Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales Cardiff is standing with seats to the side and rear of the standing section

October 14th 2011, International Centre, Bournemouth, England-- (Friday) is standing downstairs, seated balcony

For these UK shows, seats are expected to be priced at £65 for all venues with standing at £60. This will be confirmed within the next 24 hours. Now read below the following list about an allocation.

October 16th 2011, Le Zenith, Lille, France

October 17th 2011, Palais Omnisport de Paris-Bercy, Paris, France

October 19th 2011, Sportpaleis, Antwerp, Belgium

October 20th 2011, Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

October 21st 2011, Rockhal, Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg

October 23rd 2011, König-Pilsener-Arena, Oberhausen, Germany

October 25th 2011, SAP Arena, Mannheim, Germany

October 26th 2011, Olympiahalle, Munich, Germany

October 27th 2011, Leipzig Arena, Leipzig, Germany

October 29th 2011, O2 World, Berlin, Germany,

October 31st 2011, O2 World, Hamburg, Germany

November 2nd 2011, Jyske Bank Boxen, Herning, Denmark

November 3rd 2011, Malmo Arena, Malmo, Sweden

November 4th 2011, Ericsson Globe, Stockholm, Sweden

November 6th 2011, TUI Arena, Hannover, Germany

November 7, 2011, Nürnberg Arena, Nürnberg, Germany

November 8th 2011, Olympiahalle, Innsbruck, Austria

November 9th 2011, Palasport, Padova, Italy

November 11th 2011, Nelson Mandela Forum, Florence, Italy

November 12th 2011, PalaLottomatica, Rome, Italy

November 14th 2011, Mediolanum Forum di Assago, Assago, Italy

November 15th 2011, SEG Geneva Arena, Geneva, Switzerland

November 16th 2011, Hallenstadion, Zurich, Switzerland

It is expected that more dates will be announced in due course.

In the past the Promoters have generously allowed us an allocation of good seats and there’s always been enough to cater for everyone except those that applied late. This will NOT be the case this year. We will get a much more limited allocation and Knopfler’s people will get a similar allocation. I will NOT be handling standing tickets for any concert. For Manchester and Nottingham I only have 100 seats each (guaranteed to be good, I’m told), and for Glasgow (each night) and Bournemouth (not Cardiff) I have 50 seats in the balconies per show – these are for those of who just can’t stand, like me.

This is not enough to go round. So tickets will be limited to 2 per show per applicant. By request, tickets can only go to UK fans so I can’t help the overseas fans as I used to this time round. Tickets will go rapidly. What you need to do is email me on johnabaldwin@btinternet.com telling me what you want. I will reply by Sunday evening to let you know whether you’ve been lucky and, if you have, they will be reserved for you and I’ll email you a booking form. I will not be at home Friday afternoon through to Saturday evening so, although early birds may get an early response, you may not hear from me until Sunday. If you’re in time to get some of these tickets, you will hear from me by then. If you don’t hear it’s because I’ve been swamped with requests and you can assume that you have not been lucky. You will still have a chance to get good tickets though the usual outlets as they will not start selling until Monday at 9 am.

I am trying to ensure that this message is released to Desolation Row subscribers at the same time as ISIS notifies their subscribers. The allocation will be open to both and nobody (except me) will get priority.

So, if you only want standing tickets, I can’t help ... go through the venues/ticketing agents. If you want seats then you might as well try me first and use the other methods as back up next week. Sorry about this; it’s entirely out of my control. If Mr Dylan tours the UK again and if it’s a solo tour, then I can confidently predict that normal service will then be resumed.

Best wishes

John

Slight Update On Coming European Tour

While there is not much to add to our previous report, fans in “Mark Knopfler World” now accept that a joint tour is being arranged, which was not the case previously. We believe their doubt arose largely because Knopfler usually tours in support of a new album and he has already toured his last album.

We believe that an official tour announcement will be made in the very near future (watch this space), and that it will be posted more or less simultaneously, on the two artists’ official websites.

In the past, there has been an allocation of tickets for Mark Knopfler fans, when he has toured, usually through a service based in Canada! This arrangement may be repeated for this coming tour with Dylan. However, quite a few Knopfler fans have been disappointed with the tickets that they have received this way in the past, saying that they got better seats direct through the venue or through ticket agencies. It seems a bit odd but that’s what we understand.

There is one report, uncorroborated and unconfirmed, that the tour will open in Dublin and there is even a rumour that Dylan may precede the tour with a small club warm-up date. Whether Knopfler has any similar plans is unclear but nothing has been confirmed.

* * *

Whilst we have absolutely no confirmation of this, it would seem logical to assume that tickets prices for double-headers (Dylan / Knopfler) will be more expensive than the “usual” Dylan gigs. Also, in the past, Dylan’s sets at double-headers have tended to be of the shorter “festival type” sets. Only time will tell.

LATEST ON DYLAN’S LATE-2011 EUROPEAN TOUR

Since the end of 2010, there have been rumblings about Dylan undertaking a European tour later this year, in October and November 2011. It has been assumed that the promoters have been working on the arrangements for some months and it is understood that, while no details are known, they are pretty close to completion. As so often, these things are always subject to change and last minute hitches but this is what appears to be in the works.

It seems that this will be a double-header tour, with the billing shared between Dylan and another top-line performer. The name of this other performer has not been confirmed but ISIS believes him to be Mark Knopfler.

Knopfler has apparently been recording a new album of late (and may still be doing so) and he had planned to be mixing it around the time of Dylan’s intended tour. There are reports that he now intends to postpone the mixing of this album until the New Year because something else has come up. This delay could well be to accommodate a tour with Dylan. If this sequence of events is correct, it would seem reasonable to infer that Knopfler was approached by Dylan’s people rather than the other way round.

It is not known if this double-header arrangement would apply for the whole tour or just part of it but, if we were to guess, we’d go for all or most of the tour, as this would fit best with the idea of Knopfler deciding to delay the finishing off of his new album.

No dates are known for this late-2011 tour but Dylan normally seeks to get back to the United States in time for Thanksgiving, which would suggest that it will end by around the middle of November or soon thereafter. The tour is likely to start in early October. There have been rumours of shows in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy which, if true and just part of the itinerary, would suggest in turn a fairly long tour of, say, four to six weeks.

Other than the circulating rumour, ISIS has heard nothing about Dylan performing in South America in November.

The UK promoter has said that the usual "fan" ticket allocation will be available and is expected to be run as usual by Desolation Row Promotions. Further news will be available shortly.

BOB DYLAN ARCHIVE - BOX OF VISION - NOW SHIPPED

We now have tracking info for a good many of the orders. We have tracked a good many orders so far and most are scheduled to arrive end of day Monday. (With a minority to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday.)

At least we now have UPS confirmation that they are in transit...

BOB DYLAN ARCHIVE - BOX OF VISION - FURTHER UPDATE

This is a brief note for those of you who are waiting for your delivery of the Box of Vision, “Bob Dylan Archive”. Customers outside of Europe have received their deliveries but we are having problems sorting out deliveries for customers in the UK and Europe; all of which are being processed by a fulfilment centre in Sweden for onward delivery by UPS. The only information we have at the moment is that there is/was a “logistical error”, seemingly a computer problem. We can’t tell you what the exact problem is (I guess if they knew that there wouldn’t be a problem) but we are hoping for some solid information this afternoon (Friday). Jon at Box of Vision is working tirelessly to get to the bottom of this. It’s such a great pity that this distribution glitch has got in the way of such a beautiful product.

ISIS has updated most of our customers by email. Apologies to those who ordered by phone, some of which we do not have email addresses for. However, Jon at Box of Vision has and will continue to post on some of the Internet forums and we will update here.

Sincere apologies and enjoy your “Bob Dylan Archive” when in arrives!

BOB DYLAN ARCHIVE - BOX OF VISION

Due to logistical problems The Dylan Archive was not able to be shipped last week as promised by the fulfillment centre. However, we are assured that all orders were shipped on Monday 9 May via UPS World Saver. UPS delivery should take 2-3 days to arrive with almost everyone.

We aplogise for the previous misinformation but shipments of Box Of Vision is not being handled directly by ISIS and is therefore beyond our control.

Tour Round-Up

The culture ministry has given its approval for Bob Dylan’s first concert in Vietnam. As previously reported by ISIS the show is to take place on April 10 at RMIT University in southern Ho Chi Minh City. Although written approval was only given by the culture ministry on March 14, “orders” were being taken for tickets as early as March 9 and VIP packages were being given away. The venue has a capacity of about 8,250.

Further news is beginning to arrive regarding European dates: Mainz, Volkspark, Germany, June 25; Hamburg, Stadtpark, Germany, June 26 and Odense, Denmark June 27 have all been confirmed.

Mainz, Volkspark (the People’s Park) is located on Göttelmannstrasse in the city of Mainz, Germany. Outdoor concerts are held here regularly throughout the summer months. Stadtpark is a municipal park of some 148 acres in the city of Hamburg. The show in Odense, Denmark is said to be in an open-air museum.

Originally, the talk was that the June European dates would form part of a festival tour. However, although these three shows are outdoors, as I understand it, none is a festival.

London Feis Confirmed

The promoter has now confirmed to us that Bob Dylan will play London Feis Festival in Finsbury Park, on Saturday 18th June 2011. The official announcement should be forthcoming on Monday. Ticket details not yet available.

Thanks to John Baldwin for the information.

Bob Dylan Confirmed For China

A Gehua-LiveNation official stated on March 4, 2011 (today) that the Chinese ministry has approved Bob Dylan’s April shows in China: April 6, Workers Gymnasium, Beijing, and April 8, Grand Stage, Shanghai.

Tickets go on sale week commencing March 11. Prices start at 280 yuan (£26.50 UK) and go up to 1,961.411 yuan (£185.00 UK) for VIP tickets. The latter amount represents the date of Dylan’s first official New York gig, on April 11, 1961.

Bob Dylan To Play London Feis

This is something that John Baldwin and I had strongly suspected but haven’t said anything about because we didn’t have full confirmation … and still don’t.

From the UK efestivals site:

“Gaelic music will make a return to London as festival organiser Vince Power has announced that the London Feis (pronounced Fesh) will take place on Saturday 18th June in London's Finsbury Park.

London will go Gaelic when Vince Power brings the best in big name headliners in rock, folk & pop alongside the cream of Irish music talent today ... No acts have been announced yet...”

However, efestivals rumours section takes this a little further with:

“No acts are confirmed yet, the headliner will be announced this Monday (7th March). A wide range of artists will perform across three stages in the grounds of Finsbury Park. Bob Dylan is ‘rumoured for Saturday June 18’ for the Main Stage.

John and I are seeking confirmation.

Suze Rotolo 1943 - 2011

Susan Rotolo passed away on February 24, 2011 at home in her Noho (“North of Houston Street”, Greenwich Village) loft after a long illness. She was 67. Her husband of 40 years, Enzo Bartoccioli, was with her.

Perhaps best known as the young woman on the cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” LP, Susan Rotolo was Bob Dylan’s girlfriend between 1961 and 1964 and her political views were widely regarded as having sparked Dylan’s interest in topical songwriting. The influence of Bertolt Brecht on Dylan’s early work has been acknowledged by Dylan as stemming from Rotolo’s participation in Brechtian Theater and the beginning of Dylan’s interest in art galleries and painting can also be traced back to his time with Susan.

Even though Susan Rotolo had an extremely full and creative life she will inevitably always be linked to Bob Dylan. In the preface to her memoir, entitled “A Freewheelin’ Time”, Susan referred to Dylan as “the elephant in the room of my life”.

Susan (Suze) Rotolo (November 20, 1943 – February 24, 2011).

European Tour News

Those of you who have been attempting to keep track of exactly when Dylan will be coming to the UK and Europe are probably becoming a little dizzy. The first story ISIS heard was that Bob would not be in the UK until the autumn. It was then rumoured that he might well be here as early as the summer (June/July), and there were tales that at least three European festivals had secured his services for mid to late June. Then, as you will have read in our pervious item, along came the Orange County Fair in California (Friday, July 15) .

There has been talk that Bob Dylan may return to the Hop Farm Festival on Friday, July 1. We were extremely doubtful about the validly of this news story and when John Baldwin checked this rumour out with the promoter’s office the reply was: “I can categorically tell you that Dylan isn’t playing Hop Farm– we would never play two years in a row as you know and also, I am sure there aren’t many promoters in the world that can afford The Eagles, Dylan and Young on the same bill? Way too expensive!!!”

Nevertheless, it seems that Dylan will be coming to the UK and Europe for festivals in June and the first part of July. The tour is likely to begin on or around June 16 and will run to July 1 or thereabouts. It also seems that plans are still in the offing for a concert tour of Europe including the UK in the Autumn.

More on the Far East Tour

As listed below (January 31, 2011) Bob Dylan’s tour of Asia will commence with a concert in Taipei, Taiwan on April 3. This will be Dylan’s first ever performance in Taiwan.

According to the Taipei-based Very Aspect Culture Group, ticket sales, which started on Monday 14, February, have been brisk with over 40 percent of the 10,000 tickets being sold on the first day. Ticket prices start at Tw$800 (£17) but rise to Tw$8,000 (£170). The cheaper tickets all sold within the first ten minutes.

Edie Chen, an executive at the Very Aspect Culture Group, said that the tour will also take Dylan to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Japan. However, Chen said that it was not yet certain if Dylan would also perform in China.

Dylan to perform at the 2011 Grammys

Ten-time Grammy winner and Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Bob Dylan will perform at the 53rd Annual Awards Ceremony with folk-rock band the Avett Brothers and one of this year’s Grammy nominees Mumford & Sons in what has been described by the Recording Academy as a “special salute to acoustic music”.

Mumford & Sons, who appeared on the Hop Farm bill with Dylan in 2010, will perform their banjo-driven song ‘The Cave’, which will give way to the Avett Brothers and ‘Head Full Of Doubt, Road Full Of Promise’. Dylan will then take the stage. The official statement is that Dylan’s song has not “entirely been decided”.

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will be held at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday February, 13, 2011. The event will be broadcast live in high definition and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network from 8–11:30pm (PT). The show will also be broadcast on radio worldwide via Westwood One, and covered online at Grammy.com, CBS.com, and on YouTube.

Additionally, a Pre-Telecast Ceremony will take place from 1–4 pm (PT) and will be streamed live internationally on Grammy.com and YouTube beginning at 1 p.m. PT.

Chronicles Deal Looks On

We reported in the last ISIS “DIB” Newsletter that we had heard literary agent Andrew Wylie had been touting a proposed series of books by Bob Dylan, including the long awaited follow-up(s) to “Chronicles: Volume One”. We also reported that an unnamed executive at Simon & Schuster was still insisting that they already had the rights to volumes “Two” and “Three”.

I any event, we now hear that after several months of trying to create interest amongst other publishers, a deal has been signed with Dylan’s original publishing house, Simon & Schuster.

According to several industry insiders, the deal is for “six books”, five of which we mentioned in our newsletter, and details of which can be found elsewhere in this column. It is alleged that Wylie had argued that Simon & Schuster did not own the rights to the “memoir”, because the “Chronicles” series was “nonfiction stories’ from his life and not a memoir”. However, this seemingly tenuous argument, and the possibility of a lawsuit from Simon & Schuster, appears to have frightened off all other publishing houses. A Simon & Schuster spokesman declined to comment.

It has also been rumoured that the alleged eight-figure sum being asked for the books by Wylie had not been greeted overenthusiastically by those approached.

8Dylan To Play Cambodia?

Promoter Christopher Minko is quoted in “AsiaLIFE” this month (October 2010 edition, p.15) as saying: “I can also reveal for the first time to AsiaLIFE that the Mekong Sessions is in the final stages of negotiation to see Bob Dylan perform here in the first half of 2011 in a concert absolutely exclusive to Asia. That will be historic, no doubt about it”.

This fits with our report “Feelers Going Out For Concerts In 2011” (p.20 ISIS issue 152). It seems highly unlikely that this concert would happen in isolation.

It was confirmed in June that Leonard Cohen will perform at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on November 27, 2010. This concert will be both to celebrate and contribute to the restoration of the city of Phnom Penh. Cohen’s concert will help to aid victims of Cambodia’s recent tragic past; proceeds from this concert will benefit such organizations as the Cambodian Red Cross. The concert is being produced by “The Mekong Sessions” in conjunction with Robert Kory Management and AEG Live and is exclusive to the South-East Asian region.

Dylan’s concert, which is being talked about as “The Mekong Sessions 2”, would not happen until at least the spring of 2011. It should be stressed that at the time of writing no contract has been signed. Let us hope that any such concert is less problematic than the recent attempts to play China.

03 September 2010

8Confusion Reigns

The confusion over the marketing of “The Bootleg Series Volume 9: The Witmark Demos 1962-1964”, and “The Original Mono Recordings” continues. ISIS has been inundated with queries as to who will be giving what away with these releases.

The Bob Dylan T-Shirt and poster will only be available with purchases from the official USA Bob Dylan Global Store. It is our understanding however, that anyone ordering either of the above releases from the official Bob Dylan Store will NOT receive the Brandeis cd.

The Brandeis cd will be available in the USA only via Amazon.com

As stated previously in ISIS, the Brandeis cd will be available in other countries, but the sellers are yet to be determined.

8And Still More On Dylan’s 2010 Releases

The one- CD compilation from “The Original Mono Recordings” will be available at the same time as the other 2010 releases – that is, October 18 in most of Europe, October 19 in North America and maybe slightly different dates elsewhere. The full box-set is being touted as the “complete” mono recordings but it’s not unfortunately, since it excludes the original 7” vinyl 45 rpm single releases and the like, from the same period.

To mark the release of both “The Original Mono Recordings” and “The Bootleg Series Volume 9: The Witmark Demos 1962-1964”, Sony will apparently be providing U.S. radio stations with a specially recorded programme, which should be available much nearer the actual release date. There may be promo discs of this but it is unclear whether these will be provided to European radio stations or elsewhere.

If there are new publicity photos, these are likely to be shots from the 1960s not previously made generally available. If there is a video in support for these releases, it is unclear what this might be. There are, of course, some television appearances and the Pennebaker footage from the period but it would be nice to see more of that 1967 home movie footage that was included, all too briefly, in an on-line quiz and in the ‘Thunder On The Mountain’ video a few years back. Our guess is that publicity photos and a video or TV advert of some kind will be promulgated.

The Japanese edition of the mono set looks like it will be different. The following is from a Japanese record retailer:

CD box set release from Bob Dylan including his eight original albums from “Bob Dylan (1962)" to “John Wesley Harding (1968)”. All albums feature the 2010 remastering from each mono master. *Japan edition exclusively features cardboard sleeve (mini LP) manufactured by Japan (size: 13.5 x 13.5cm). It faithfully replicates the original LP artwork with Obi. Limited copies of 5000. (All product details, including availability, images, language(s), special features, and bonus extras, are subject to change without prior notice.)

It seems that this Japanese version of the original mono recordings will be a 9-CD set. We assume this means that “Blonde On Blonde” will be spread over two CDs (as per the original double-LP release) rather than including additional mono material from the period – but we live in hope.

Doubtless, there will be other editions, promotional items and sales initiatives from the different sales territories around the world. Here at ISIS, we’d love to receive the details: ianwoodward9@aol.com

There seems to be some doubt about the length of the Brandeis recording. One source says it lasts 45 minutes, while another is adamant that it is nearer 30 minutes than forty. We would like to stress that the track listing given before is not definitive but as stated some five months ago. Whatever, it seems a fine gesture that it should be released officially and we’re looking forward to hearing it.

In the longer term, there is a suggestion that these two box-sets will be the last from the 1960s for a while and that Sony has in mind to turn to the 1970s for its next large-scale Dylan release. If this is correct, then the mere fact that Sony is already looking beyond the current releases is a very good sign indeed.

01 September 2010

8Mixed Up Confusion:

In an online Rolling Stone article dated August 31, 2010, writer Andy Greene states that Bob Dylan’s short Brandeis University performance will only be available from Amazon. Harold Lepidus for examiner.com, who picked up the story from Rolling Stone, states that this “bonus” disc will only be available from amazon.com. However, neither of these articles gives the full story and both are misleading to Dylan fans outside of the USA.

The truth is that the Brandeis CD is not truly a “bonus disc”, but a completely separate CD. This CD will be given away to buyers of either “The Bootleg Series 9” or the “Mono Box Set”. It will only be available from one retailer in each country (territory) in the world. Each Sony territory will have their own partner and Sony’s partner in the USA is Amazon.com.

However, when I last talked with Sony UK they had not made their choice of partner and it is extremely unlikely that all Sony territories in the world will chose to go with the same retailer.

The reason I mention this is that ISIS has been inundated with emails and calls today from subscribers who believe they will not be able to obtain the Brandeis CD in the UK and that they will HAVE to buy from Amazon in the States.

The fact is that this CD will be available in all countries and you do not have to order from the USA.

I also notice that the Rolling Stone article gives the date of the Brandeis performance as being May 1, 1963. This date is incorrect. In the April issue of ISIS Magazine, (#149) Ian Woodward wrote a lengthy article about Dylan’s non-appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. In this piece, Ian talks about the Brandeis University 1st Annual Folk Festival and ISIS reproduces the poster from the event.

The date on the poster is “Friday May 10 & Saturday May 11 1963”. Dylan is listed as appearing on Friday, May 10.

Further update soon..

30 August 2010

(Breaking News Exclusive - coordinated with “Desolation Row Promotions”. )

8More information on Dylan’s 2010 releases

An article earlier this year, in ISIS # 149, about Bob Dylan’s non-appearance on the 12 May 1963 Ed Sullivan show included reference to Dylan’s performance, two days earlier, at the “1st Annual Folk Festival” at Brandeis University. Around the time ISIS went to press, there was a rumour that a recording of this performance had been found in the Ralph Gleason archive. Meanwhile, there has been contradictory information as to whether there would be a “collectors’ edition” of the forthcoming "Volume 9" in "The Bootleg Series". Now it seems that this will happen and the aforementioned Brandeis performance will make up the bonus disc. Here is the track listing as provided earlier this year:

1.      Honey Just Allow Me One More Chance

2.      Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues

3.      Ballad of Hollis Brown

4.      Masters of War

5.      Talkin’ World War III Blues

6.      Bob Dylan’s Dream

7.      Talkin’ Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues

Apparently, the opening song is cut or in some way incomplete, so it will be interesting to hear if this how it appears on the bonus disc. 'Bear Mountain' is the one song that was mentioned in a contemporary review of the concert and it always seemed an odd choice for a 1963 performance. It is now understood that this was in response to a request from the audience and we must assume that this audience member recalled the song from one of Dylan’s previous visits to the Boston area. The whole recording lasts about 40-45 minutes and, before you ask, we have neither got nor heard this recording either.

The current position seems to be that this bonus disc will not be released as an individual item, nor will be available on a widespread basis. Instead, it will be sold as part of a “Bootleg Series Volume 9” package and through just one selected retailer in any one country.  Details are not yet known.

Other news is that there will be a one volume version of “The Complete Mono Recordings”, having a selection of tracks from the 8 albums. At one time, it was thought that this would be a promo-only CD for radio stations but it is now said that it will be available through record retailers.  The thinking seems to be that it will be bought for dads and uncles at Christmas by younger relatives unwilling or unable to afford the price of the full box-set.

Meanwhile, we must assume that Sony is preparing (or, more likely, finalising) its marketing campaign and any information on this and any other developments on these releases would be welcome: ianwoodward9@aol.com

8Special Dylan Concert

Rumours began to circulate early this month with regards to a “special concert” which would take place in mid August, probably August 25, 2010. On August 13 the rumour was confirmed on the bobdylan.com website with the words “Bob Dylan and his band will perform a special show on August 25. Details will be announced next week”. The following day, ISIS was informed that the show would be staged at The Warfield in San Francisco. Today August 16, The Warfield website seems to have given the game away by stating that they will be staging a concert with “Very special guests! (to be announced) on August 25, 2010”. The ticket prices are to be confirmed but it appears that they will not go on sale until three hours before show time, which is at 8:00pm. The nature of this concert, which is likely to feature other artists as well as Bob Dylan, is unclear. Perhaps a charity event?

8More on Dylan’s 2010 releases

A month ago, we ended our report on the 40-CD box-set rumour as follows:

There are two other Dylan projects on-going at present. One is an 8-CD set of Dylan’s earliest albums in mono. The other is the next Bootleg Series release, as mentioned in ISIS # 150 (on page 9 and page 18). No release date has yet been set for either but both projects are being prepared for release around the same time, later this year. In respect of the next Bootleg Series release, rumours some time back suggested a set of non-live recordings, well-known to collectors but in better quality, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing (mid-June 2010) and Sony’s plans could change meanwhile.

It seems that this report was correct and that Sony’s plans have not changed.

The next Bootleg Series release, Volume 9, will indeed be “a set of non-live recordings, well-known to collectors”, as stated. Although based on “The Witmark Demos”, sources say it will include some Leeds demo recordings as well.  There are said to be 47 tracks. There is no information as to the packaging for this release.

Each album in “The 8-CD set of Dylan’s earliest albums in mono” will have a paper sleeve and the set will be in a slipcase, with a booklet, including liner notes by Greil Marcus. The albums will be from “Bob Dylan” to “John Wesley Harding” and it is believed that all are being freshly mastered for this release, using first issue copies of the mono LPs for reference, in order to ensure that they get the sound to match that on the albums when they were first released. Back at that time, albums were principally mixed for mono release, with less care and attention being paid to the stereo mixes, and many collectors prefer the mono versions. None have been issued officially on CD in mono before, although mono bootleg CDs are not unknown.

The official announcement of these two box-sets is expected in mid to late August, two months ahead of their actual release - itself about two months before Christmas. This suggests when Sony hopes to gain its greatest sales but why are the two being released at the same time? Most likely Sony is trying to tempt the buyers of one set to buy the other, too, on the assumption that the two sets will be reviewed together in the press and that reviewers may well compare “early” and “final” versions of some songs across the two releases.

Once again, further information is welcome: ianwoodward9@aol.com

8Rumoured 40Cd Box Set

A longer version of this report has been published in our ISIS newsletter which was mailed to subscribers last week. We seek more information on this matter for ISIS #151, the deadline for which is in approximately three weeks.

On Wednesday, 9 June 2010, on a Tampa Bay, Florida, arts page blog, John Fleming of the St. Petersburg Times said he’d recently conducted an interview with Didier Deutsch, whose name can be found on a number of Dylan album releases. The post mainly concerned various Broadway show original cast album releases. In the preamble to the interview, he mentioned that Deutsch had said that he was currently working on a 40-CD Bob Dylan box-set. On being contacted, Mr Fleming replied that Mr Deutsch had said he was working on a Bob Dylan project, right now, for Legacy Recordings - a 40-CD box-set, to comprise Dylan’s complete output, minus one album, with 2 CDs of bonus material. No other details were given, so we don’t know how Legacy counted Dylan’s Columbia albums nor what bonus material might be included. As for that “minus one album”, we assume that the phrase refers to 1973’s “Dylan” release. However, enquiries elsewhere indicate that, while this work may well be on-going, Sony has no plans to release the set. It seems the project was cancelled, in terms of an actual release, some time ago but, if Didier Deutsch is still working it, this suggests that the mastering stage, having been started, is being completed. Presumably, this will allow Sony to stockpile the mastered albums for future use. So, if Sony’s planned a 40-CD box-set Bob Dylan has now put that on ice, what plans does it have? There are two other Dylan projects on-going at present. One is an 8-CD set of Dylan’s earliest albums in mono. The other is the next Bootleg Series release, as mentioned in ISIS # 150 (on page 9 and page 18). No release date has yet been set for either but both projects are being prepared for release around the same time, later this year. In respect of the next Bootleg Series release, rumours some time back suggested a set of non-live recordings, well-known to collectors but in better quality, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing (mid-June 2010) and Sony’s plans could change meanwhile. Anyone able to refute or add further details to any of the above should contact: ianwoodward9@aol.com

8Chronicles Index

Michael Gray writes: “This isn’t exactly up-to-the-minute, but after I bought Dylan’s Chronicles Volume One, I decided that for my own research purposes I would compile an index to the book. Of course the book should have come with an index in the first place: any (supposedly) non-fiction book short changes the reader if it doesn’t provide one. In the case of Chronicles Volume One, I also remember seeing that someone was selling an index way back in October 2006 at the John Green Memorial Day in Northampton  -  but by then I’d already constructed my own. It’s been in the bowels of my computer ever since, but I rediscovered it a few days ago.

It runs to 31 pages, and contains 1,384 entries: in total 6,517 words and numbers.” Michael is offering PDF files of his index on his blog at

8Summer European Tour

The European agents has informed John Baldwin that the European tour is almost finalised but Bob’s people have still to sign the contracts for a number of essential phases of the tour, so nothing further can be announced as yet.

However, as previously stated we can confirm that there will be no UK shows but, and this is the only bit of information that we are allowed to pass on at present, Bob will be appearing at one UK festival. It will be the Hop Farm Festival in Kent, which takes place on July 3rd to 5th. Bob will be appearing on the 3rd. Tickets are not yet on sale and non of the acts have been officially announced. Tickets will cost £125 for the weekend to include parking and camping; last year, day tickets were available at £65 and we should find out by the middle of next week whether they will be available this year. Tickets are restricted to 20,000 total. John will have access to tickets at cost but he has yet to find out whether this will be for day tickets or for the weekend. As is usual with UK dates ISIS would hope to share in this ticket allocation.

8Bob Dylan on Canvas

13 Feb 2010 - 10 Apr 2010 | 24 Bruton Street, London

“This suite of new acrylic on canvas paintings by Bob Dylan is, on first sight, startlingly fluent, original and imaginative, but it is soon clear that they are also subtle and with deep meaning.”                          Professor Maurice Cockrill RA

On 13 February 2010 the prestigious Halcyon Gallery at 24 Bruton Street, Mayfair will open Bob Dylan on Canvas: an exclusive exhibition of Bob Dylan’s first paintings on canvas. This unique body of work witnesses the culmination of his artistic progression in The Drawn Blank Series: from drawings to works on paper and now finally to canvas. The Bob Dylan on Canvas exhibition signifies an end to this chapter in his artistic career as he moves forward from The Drawn Blank Series and onto the next phase.

Based on drawings and sketches made while on the road during the period of 1989 - 1992, the paintings in Bob Dylan on Canvas visually echo the stylistic hallmarks of Dylan’s prose, poetry and music. Just as Dylan’s songs are constantly reinvigorated and rediscovered through his live performances, so these paintings revisit images and scenes which were captured in all their immediacy by the artist.

In these latest works the painterly quality enhances the atmosphere of the subject matter, as Professor Maurice Cockrill RA writes: The larger canvases of these later paintings are images which stand as single statements offering multiple interpretations. Each has a brilliance and translucency of colour that contributes greatly to the emotional charge of the subject, in much the same way vigorous brushwork brings a particular velocity to the drawing and construction of the compositions.

Bob Dylan on Canvas is the last UK exhibition of this body of work and foreshadows his upcoming exhibition at the prestigious Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen in which he will unveil new works along with selected pieces from The Drawn Blank Series, curated by Dr. Kasper Monrad.

Paul Green, President of the Halcyon Gallery, commented: “These paintings are the culmination of everything Dylan has done with The Drawn Blank Series so far, signalling a new phase in the artist's career. The evolution of medium, from paper to canvas, has been an important development resulting in a creative explosion which has given greater meaning to the paintings. Bob Dylan on Canvas is the grand finale of the Drawn Blank years and the precursor of the new 'Brazil' series in which Dylan explores the canvas further.”

8Little Drummer Boy Video

A fast paced animated video, conceived and hand-coloured by Jeff Scher, of people exchanging greetings and eating and making merry over the Holliday period has been made to accompany Dylan’s recording of ‘Little Drummer Boy’.

Artist and filmmaker Jeff Scher is said to have “rotoscoped” classic films and home movies and hand-decorated them with watercolours and crayons. Unlike the ‘Must Be Santa’ video, Dylan does not appear. The video’s launch, December 8, 2009, is part of Amazon’s “12 Days of Christmas” promotion, and the site links directly to Feeding America.

8"CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART" PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITY

The promotional activity for "Christmas In The Heart" is to start around the middle of November and will include the showing of the video for "Must Be Santa".

8DYLAN AND "THE PEOPLE SPEAK" PROJECT

In the summer, there was news of Dylan's involvement in a television programme entitled The People Speak, which was inspired by A People's History of the United States, by Howard Zinn, and Voices of A People's History of the United States, edited by Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove. The former book (a history of the country from the perspective of those who feature less commonly in conventional histories) was originally published in 1980, with an updated edition coming out in 2003, and the latter (an anthology of writings, speeches, poems and songs by a wide variety of people, including Allen Ginsberg, Martin Luther King Jnr and John Steinbeck, amongst many others) followed in 2004.

The report this summer stated that Dylan had performed two Woody Guthrie songs for the project, namely "Vigilante Man" and "Do Re Mi". Moore added, "The idea was to have primarily people doing other people's words and sort of celebrating them and doing it, which is why Bob didn't do his own song. They wanted to celebrate what's happened in the past." Chris Moore, the producer and co-director of the television programme, said at the time that not all the performances would be included.

In the event, Dylan will perform "Do Re Mi" in The People Speak, which will be broadcast by the History Channel in the United States on 13 December 2009. The film will also include Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman, Danny Glover and Bruce Springsteen amongst many others.

To supplement the project, a number of videos will be available on demand or on-line but it is not yet known if this will include Dylan's "Vigilante Man

8‘Must Be Santa’ Video

Back in ISIS 146 (page 15) we mentioned that Bob Dylan would be appearing in a video for a single to be taken from the “Christmas In The Heart” album. At the time there was no indication as to which track was going to be featured, although ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘Must Be Santa’ seemed obvious candidates.

We can now confirm that the video, featuring Dylan, was shot in LA on September 23, 2009.  The video shoot, which was for ‘Must Be Santa’, commenced at around 9 am Wednesday and continued through until the early hours of Thursday. Predictably, the video which featured singers and people dancing to the polka rhythms of old Hibbing, is set in at the time of Dylan’s childhood– the 1950s.

It is our understanding that the video does not feature any of the musicians that played on the “Christmas In The Heart” album.

8BOB DYLAN PARTNERS WITH INTERNATIONAL CHARITIES TO HELP FEED HUNDREDS-OF-THOUSANDS DURING HOLIDAY SEASON

CRISIS UK AND WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME TO RECEIVE ARTIST’S ROYALTIES FROM CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART CD IN PERPETUITY

All of Bob Dylan’s international royalties from his forthcoming album of holiday songs, Christmas In The Heart - which is being released on Monday, October 12 - will be donated to the World Food Programme and Crisis UK in perpetuity, it was announced today by Columbia Records.

Dylan’s immediate donations will provide 500,000 meals to school children in the developing world during the holidays through the WFP and 15,000 meals to homeless people in the United Kingdom during the eight days of Christmas (December 23 - December 30) through Crisis. The WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide, aiming to feed 108 million people in 74 countries Portrait by William Claxton       in 2009. Crisis is the United Kingdom’s national charity for single homeless people, dedicated to ending homelessness by delivering life-changing services and campaigning for change.

Today’s news follows the recent announcement of Bob Dylan’s partnership with Feeding America in the United States in which he is donating all of his U.S. royalties from Christmas In The Heart to that organization in perpetuity. “Bob Dylan’s generosity to help WFP feed the world’s hungry couldn’t come at a better time. Starting this Christmas, we can give a meal to thousands of hungry school children all over the world a gift of a lifetime” said Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of WFP. “The number of hungry in the world – many of them children – has hit a historic high while food assistance has reached a historic low. For 80 percent of the world, a government safety net is little more than a dream. Bob Dylan’s new album will help change that.”

Leslie Morphy, Chief Executive, Crisis, said, “At Christmas, Crisis provides companionship and support to alleviate loneliness and isolation together with vital services, such as housing and job advice, to help people take their first steps out of homelessness. We are very grateful to Bob Dylan for his generous donation from the proceeds of his latest album. The money will help us provide thousands of hot meals to our guests including a traditional Christmas dinner." Bob Dylan commented, “That the problem of hunger is ultimately solvable means we must each do what we can to help feed those who are suffering and support efforts to find long-term solutions. I’m honored to partner with the World Food Programme and Crisis in their fight against hunger and homelessness.”

Brazil Series

New Art to be shown in Demark, Autumn 2010

The National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst) in Copenhagen will host a major exhibition of Bob Dylan’s paintings in the autumn of 2010. The announcement was made September 15, 2009 by the museum’s Director, Karsten Ohrt. The exhibition will feature almost 100 works, including the world premiere of 30 large-format acrylic paintings from Dylan’s upcoming “Brazil Series”, as well as many (circa 50-60) original paintings from “The Drawn Blank Series”.

Schaffer’s Autobiography

It is reported that Paul Schaffer, who we believe first met Dylan during the latter’s appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1979, has written his autobiography, due for publication later this year. It is said that the opening chapter is entitled “Dylan and Me”. Schaffer later worked on Late Night With Letterman television show, on which Dylan has appeared, and their paths have crossed on several other occasions over the years.

Schaffer has a wide musical background, which includes co-writing ‘It’s Raining Men’, a hit for The Weather Girls in 192 – it reportedly sold over six million copies world-wide.

Christmas Album Official Announcement

On August 25, 2009 Columbia Records officially announced the release of Bob Dylan’s Christmas album. The working title for the album, the news of which was first made known on the ISIS website on August 20, has been confirmed as “Christmas In The Heart”. Columbia has also confirmed that our predicted U.S. release date of October 13, 2009 is correct. Columbia also confirm two of the songs already mentioned by ISIS, ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’ and ‘Must Be Santa’, but also mentions ‘Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Little Drummer Boy’ as being on the album. Columbia has stated that all of the artist’s U.S. royalties from sales of the album will be donated to the charity “Feeding America”. The press release states: “Bob Dylan is also donating all of his future U.S. royalties from this album to Feeding America in perpetuity”.

The statement goes on to say: “Additionally, the artist is partnering with two international charities to provide meals during the holidays for millions in need in the United Kingdom and the developing world, and will be donating all of his future international royalties from “Christmas In The Heart” to those organizations in perpetuity. Details regarding the international partnerships will be announced next week”.

Feeding America is the United States leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Their network members supply food to more than 25 million Americans each year, including 9 million children and 3 million senior citizens. Their network of more than 200 food banks serves all 50 states plus the Districts of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Bob Dylan commented: “It’s a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone – 12 million of those children – often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from. I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season”.

Update

ISIS has now had an email confirmation that Denny Freeman has indeed departed Bob Dylan's tour band.

22 August

Charlie Sexton To Rejoin Dylan?

According to Diane Scott of the Continental Club, Charlie Sexton has rejoined Dylan’s band, replacing Denny Freeman for Dylan's October tour. The Continental Club is a renowned live music venue in Austin, Texas and Diane Scott works as PR for the club. The club’s newsletter, August 21, 2009, appears to confirm a story that was picked up by ISIS a week ago. It seems that the news has been confirmed by Denny Freeman who apparently told Scott: “Well, at least it’s Charlie”. If the report is true, then it seems that this change in the tour band came about after Sexton joined Dylan for ten songs during the concert at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. The current line-up is the longest running since the so called Never Ending Tour began in 19. ISIS has been unable to confirm this story.

News of Sexton rejoining Dylan at this juncture seems strange. In March 2009, Charlie Sexton’s band the Arc Angels announced that they were reforming and that they were excited about making a new album, a DVD and a tour. Arc Angels’ band member Doyle Bramhall even left Eric Clapton to reform the band. The Arc Angels have extensive plans to tour in late 2009 and have already opened shows for Eric Clapton in Great Britain & Ireland.

CHRISTMAS ALBUM UPDATE

A report has drifted across here suggesting that the working title for the new album is "Christmas in the Heart" and that the currently planned U.S. release date is 13 October. This date coincides with Dylan's Fall tour - to be precise with the first of three shows at the Hollywood Palladium - but whether we will get to hear Dylan singing any of these Christmas songs in concert is another matter entirely. We assume that the album is scheduled for 12 October release in the U.K. and much of Europe but 9 October in Germany and Italy.

Of course, ISIS will be stocking the CD.

Christmas album – more reports and rumours

It is said that the selection and sequencing of the songs for Dylan’s mooted Christmas album have been finalized, though no details have yet been officially announced.

So far, ISIS has identified five songs, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Silver Bells, Must Be Santa, Here Comes Santa and I’ll Be Home for Christmas and nobody has suggested that any of these is wrong. In addition, there are now reports and rumours that Frosty the Snowman and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas are on the album. We wait to see.

It is also understood that Dylan will be appearing in a video for a single, though no indication of what that single might be – perhaps Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Finally, one source believes that the proceeds from the album (and presumably any single) will be going to charity but, if so, the charity has not yet been named.

Any additional information will be most welcome.

concert cancelled

Promoters have stated it is too hot to stage the event. The show at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ tonight (August 11) has been cancelled as temperatures are expected to reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

MORE ON DYLAN'S CHRISTMAS ALBUM

There has been some feedback following our reprinting of a new Dylan album, for which many thanks.

It seems that this project was being mooted some months back. It is a personal project of Dylan himself rather than an idea put forward by his record company. The sessions took place in May of this year at Groove Masters studio in Santa Monica, for which the Wikipedia entry reads:

Groove Masters is a semi-private recording studio owned by Jackson Browne. Located in Santa Monica, California, the studio has been the setting for many of Browne's recordings. The head sound engineer is Grammy-nominated Peter Dieter. The studio occasionally opens its doors to old friends, such as David Crosby, as well as new independent artists.

David Hidalgo is once again reported to be among the musicians involved and, at one stage, backing singers were considered but it isn't clear if any will appear on the finished product. The album is said to have been mixed and finished in June.

So far, five songs have been mentioned, none originals. Two reported directly to ISIS were "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" (the popular Christmas carol with the affecting phrase, "The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight") and "Silver Bells" (a song associated with Bing Crosby). Three others have been mentioned by another website, namely "Must Be Santa", "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". A few years back, "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" was reportedly performed at a soundcheck for a Dylan concert, as was "The First Noel".

Once again, additional information is welcome: ianwoodward9@aol.com

Did Dylan record an album in May (and was it a Christmas album)?

A month or so ago, there was a rumour that, following his European tour earlier this year, Dylan had gone into a studio to record another album. This was surprising in itself, given that "Together Through Life" had only just been released, but what was even more surprising was the suggestion that this would be a Christmas album. At the time, we could get no substantiation of the story and, not wishing to spread a rumour for which there was no additional information, chose not to include it in ISIS magazine or on the ISIS website. In the hope of receiving feedback/confirmation, we did, however, print this rumour in our ISIS newsletter (June 2009). Since then, we have received more snippets about this initial rumour. While we cannot reveal the nature of, nor the source of, these snippets, we now feel there are sufficient grounds to go public.

We have also linked these various bits and pieces of information to another, earlier, rumour. Around the time that "Together Through Life" was about to come out, it was said that its release had in fact been brought forward from the originally slated date, namely this coming autumn. We wondered why and now think we have the answer.

We cannot guarantee that these reports will prove to be accurate but this is the way it seems to us:-

Dylan and Sony are planning to release a Christmas album later this year. There is no indication whether this album will consist of Christmas standards, Dylan originals or a mixture of the two.

Anyone who can add further substantiation to this story or can provide additional information is invited to contact ianwoodward9@aol.com.

Follow-up to "No Direction Home"?

There have also been indications that a project about the Dylan's Rolling Thunder period is in the works as a follow-up to No Direction Home - that is, as a TV film, a DVD and perhaps a CD release, too.

OUR STORY HAS NOW BEEN PICKED UP BY THE WORLD'S PRESS

AND CONFIRMED BY A DYLAN REPRESENTATIVE

TOGETHER THROUGH WORDS ?

Another, rather surprising, rumour has come to light - but it is only a rumour, if an extremely interesting one. The rumour is that most of the songs on “Together Through Life” were not written by Bob Dylan alone but were co-written.

As is our normal practice, we have tried to check this but without success - neither confirmation nor denial. We mention the rumour now, without that additional substantiation, because we seek information to help confirm or refute it. Please contact ianwoodward9@aol.com or the ISIS office. We have withheld some details as a cross-check against any additional information received.

Together Through Life - Full Personnel

Bob Dylan - Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals. Mike Campbell - Guitar, Mandolin. David Hidalgo - Accordion, Guitar. Donny Herron - Steel Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Trumpet. Tony Garnier - Bass. George Recile - Drums.

Recorded and Mixed by David Bianco. Assisted by Bil Lane and Rich Tosi.

Pro Tools engineers: David Spreng, Rafael Serrano. Mastered by Eddy Schreyer

Package Design: Coco Shinomiya.

Photography: front cover: Bruce Davidson / Magnum photos back cover: Josef Koudelka / Magnum Photos inside photos: Danny Clinch

All music by Bob Dylan except 'My Wife's Home Town' (music by Bob Dylan and Willie Dixon) All lyrics by Bob Dylan with Robert Hunter except 'This Dream Of You' which is lyrics by Bob Dylan only.

TOGETHER THROUGH WORDS – Part 2

A day or so ago, we reported a rumour that Dylan had co-written most of the songs on the new album. While we had faith in our original source and therefore posted the rumour here, we had no supporting confirmation. We have now received confirmation that Dylan’s co-writer is Robert Hunter.

This collaboration is believed to extend only to the lyrics. The music, with the exception of a nod to Willie Dixon for one song, has been provided by Dylan alone.

No details have been confirmed as to which of the songs are co-written (and which not) but it is believed that all the songs, except one, were co-written by Dylan and [Grateful Dead lyricist] Hunter. Any further information on this aspect would be most welcome (contact: ianwoodward9@aol.com).

It is somewhat strange that, with the steady flow of pre-publicity over recent weeks, there has been no mention of this Dylan-Hunter collaboration. It may be that there was concern over the possible reaction of press and fans alike, after their previous collaborations (‘Silvio’ and ‘Ugliest Girl In The World’ on “Down In The Groove”). However, that collaboration seemed more one of chance (and to do with filling an album during a dry period), while this seems closer to Dylan writing with Jacques Levy for the “Desire” album.

TOGETHER THROUGH WORDS - Part 3

Almost as soon as we posted Part 2 in this little saga, we got our hoped for third source. Better than that, it was official in that it came in the form of a Polish promo CD for Beyond Here Lies Nothin'. It is possible to make out that the composer credits and they go to "(Bob Dylan, Robert Hunter)".

That only leaves one question: how many songs were co-written? This has not been made entirely clear but, as we said before, we believe that all the songs on the new album except one are co-written. The exception is said to be:  "This Dream Of You".

The problem here is that this is not congruent with the back story about the album. That said that Dylan was asked to write a song for a the film "My Own Love Song" and doing this encouraged him to continue writing - or something like that. We're not suggesting that this isn't true but why then isn't the film song "Life Is Hard" the one written by Dylan alone? There are explanations one could put forward but, for the moment, we'll leave the question hanging.

Finally, we believe that, contrary to previous reports, Benmont Tench is not on the album.

Update 12 April, 2009

DYLAN'S INFLUENCES: IT'S ALL THERE IN A BOOK

Library Journal says "The Songs He Didn’t Write: Bob Dylan under the Influence" is "meticulously researched and revelatory".

In the introduction to his new book “The Songs He Didn’t Write”, author Derek Barker wrote in great detail about how, at the end of the 190s, the psychedelic Godfathers of jam, the Grateful Dead, “saved Dylan’s career.” The American “Library Journal” called Barker’s introduction “revelatory”; at the time of writing they didn’t know just how revelatory.  Order your copy HERE

ANOTHER “ROLLING STONE” INTERVIEW

Dylan will be on the cover of (American) Rolling Stone magazine, the first issue with a cover date in May. The photo session took place near the Parc Monceau in Paris, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on 7 April. The same issue of Rolling Stone will include an interview with Dylan, also conducted in Paris presumably on the same date but not by one of their regular music commentators. Both the photo session and the interview may have taken place in a hotel.

PRE-RELEASE GOINGS-ON

The French Rolling Stone produced a 100-page Dylan special (Hors Serie Collectors No.3) to coincide with Dylan’s two Paris concerts.

The 4th part of the “Conversation with Bill Flanagan” will be available from 6 a.m. (New York time) on Monday 13 April through the CNN website. The 5th part will be available on Monday, 20 April 2009 but the website to carry it has not been clarified. Outside the United States, different arrangements may apply for this Dylan exclusive.

A video for Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ has been produced, consisting of more photographs by Bruce Davidson, whose work is on the cover of the album. This video will available on 20 and 21 April in the United States through the Amazon website - and through other websites in other countries.

The album will also be available for radio broadcast in the week commencing 20 April, at around the time that brief TV adverts will be shown in Britain (and maybe elsewhere).

A FURTHER RUMOUR

A further rumour is that the album artwork will include a picture by another Magnum photographer, Josef Koudelka. One of Koudelka’s books is entitled “Gypsies”, a title rumoured for Dylan’s new album at one time. “Ruffians” was another title contender, apparently, while someone suggested “Together Through Time”, perhaps an inaccurate rendering of the final title but you never know.

“THEME TIME RADIO HOUR” UPDATE

It has been said that the “Goodbye”show, the last in Series 3 will be longer than one hour. As to whether there will be another series, this has not yet been considered, let alone decided. Let’s hope there is another series. If you have a view on this, let Sirius XM know, not us.

End of update

I FEEL A CHANGE COMING ON

There seems to be a lot of discussion about the lyrics of this new song. Here's our Wicked Messenger's take on them:

I Feel a change coming on

Well, I’m looking the world over, looking far off into the east

And I see my baby coming, she’s walking with the village priest

I feel a change coming on and the last part of the day is already gone

We got so much in common, we strive for the same old ends

And I just can’t wait, wait for us to become friends

I feel a change coming on and the fourth part of the day is already gone

Well life is for love and they say that love is blind

If you wanna live easy, baby, pack your clothes with mine

I feel a change coming on and the fourth part of the day is already gone

Well now, what’s the use in dreaming, you got better things to do

Dreams never did work for me anyway, even when they did come true

You are as aurous as ever, baby, you can start a fire

I must be losing my mind, you’re the object of my desire

I feel a change coming on and the fourth part of the day is already gone

I’m listening to Billy Joe Shaver and I’m reading James Joyce

Some people they tell me, I’ve got the blood of the land in my voice

Everybody got all the money, everybody got all the beautiful clothes

Everybody got all the flowers, I don’t have one single rose

I feel a change coming on and the fourth part of the day is already gone

We have no idea how accurate or otherwise these will turn out to be. The "fourth part of the day" is biblical in origin, incidentally.

Theme Time Radio Hour - Series 3

Series 3 of Theme Time Radio Hour appears to be drawing to a close. This week's programme ( April onwards) is "Clearance Sale" and it has also been described as "Big Clearance Sale". Also, a continuity announcer in the States apparently said that this show would be "Goodbye" but we believe he got mixed up and "Goodbye" will come the week after next (15 April onwards). A bigger than usual "Clearance Sale" followed by a "Goodbye" indicates that Series 3 is coming to an end, with 25 original shows, the same number as Series 2. But will it be "Goodbye" or "Au revoir"?

Bill Flanagan interview

A Few Quick Comments:

As mentioned in our previous post the tour band remains unchanged. After ignoring the “Modern Times” album completely at the first night in Stockholm three songs from that album were included in the second show.

Some interesting inclusions from the first two nights: ‘Billy’ (A utube audio of which can be heard HERE) at Berns Salonger (first ever live performance of this song) and ‘One More Cup Of Coffee (Valley Below)’ at the Globen with Bob on guitar (first performance since the 2007 duet with Jack White and first full Bob performance of the song since 1993).

Although we will continue to post any highlights from this current tour we do not intend to post the nightly set-lists as they are available on Boblinks

Part Two of the Bill Flanagan interview can be found on bobdylan.com This second part reveals much more about the new album and confirms the news that was broken by ISIS several weeks ago that both Mike Campbell and David Hidalgo are amongst the musicians on the album.

Bob Dylan in Trouble with Neighbors Over Stinky Portable Potty

A couple in Malibu is complaining that their neighbor, rock poet Bob Dylan, has permanently parked a stinky portable potty next to the property line they share with him.

Cindy and Dave Emminger wrote a letter to a local weekly newspaper publicly complaining that the City of Malibu has not helped them address the problem.

The Emmingers said Dylan rented a "toxic, hazardous, carcinogenic chemical toilet," and "plopped it down next to their home." The toilet spews horrible chemical odors into their home, the couple said.

"This toilet is apparently intended by my neighbor, Bob Dylan, to be a permanent fixture on his property," the Emmingers complained.

The city's code enforcement staff has apparently been unable to force Dylan to remove the potty.

A spokesman for Dylan could not be reached for comment Sunday, and the City of Malibu routinely refuses to comment on specific code enforcement issues.

Dylan has lived in Malibu for decades, where he has put together an equestrian compound by buying up several adjacent properties in an older section of the city, not far from Zuma beach.

DYLAN'S NEW STUDIO ALBUM (Round-up of the facts as we know them)

March 15, 2009

We are expecting the official announcement of Bob Dylan's new studio album on Monday (16 March) when, presumably, all will be revealed. Meanwhile, we thought it might be useful to draw together what we have heard to date and to see what gets confirmed and what turns out to be wrong..

> The album title is Together Through Life

> The release date in Europe will be Monday, 27 April (though it may be available on Friday,24 April in some territories)

> The release date in North America will be Tuesday, 2 April

> It will come in three formats: a regular 1-CD version; a limited edition 2-Disc version; and a 1-LP vinyl release

> There is no information regarding the extras in the 2-Disc version but there are rumours. These include the second disc being a DVD, possibly of interview out-takes from No Direction Home and an audio track of an unreleased early 1960s' song - but these are just unsubstantiated rumours

> The cover artwork is a photograph by Bruce Davidson

> There are ten tracks on the album, of which nine song titles are known: Beyond Here Lies Nothing; Life Is Hard; My Wife's Hometown; Forgetful Heart; Shake Shake Mama; I Feel A Change Comin' On; If You Ever Go To Houston; This Dream of You; and It's All Good.

> A promotional video is expected to go with the new release, though no details have been forthcoming. You may care to check our speculation in the final paragraph of "Additional Information About The New Album", below.

> The musicians on the album include, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) on accordion and possibly Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench (Heartbreakers) on guitar and keyboards. These musicians join the core of Dylan's current touring band.

> The impetus for the new album came from Dylan writing and recording a song for a film entitled My Own Love Song (again, there is information on this below)

> An extra London concert, possibly in North London on Sunday, 26 April, is expected to be announced soon, too, and this concert is believed to be linked to the release of the new album.

ISIS will be accepting advanced orders for the new album soon.

Dylan Gets Dark on Surprise New Disc

The follow up album to Modern Times is said by David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine to consist of "a set of raw country tunes". Pre-gig Musical Get Together, Dublin, May 6, 2009

On May 5 and May 6, 2009 Bob Dylan appears at the O2 Arena, (formerly The Point Depot) in Dublin. If you are looking for somewhere to meet like-minded Dylan fans during the day on Wednesday May 6 before the gig then look no further … long time ISIS subscriber John Roberts has organised a gathering at “The Scene“, a great venue bar in the centre of Dublin, in Stephens Green.

Kent Duchaine, a Minnesota Blues Minstrel, will perform during the daytime get together. Kent, who has backed blues greats such as Hubert Sumlin, Boogie Woogie Red, Luther Tucker, and Eddie Burns, has also opened for Bukka White and shared the bill with Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker and Howling Wolf.

The gathering starts at 12 noon at ‘The Scene’, South Kings St, Stephens Green, Dublin 2, on the corner, below Dunnes Stores. All this and one of the best pints of Guinness in Ireland too! Admission is just 5 Euros, payable on the door.

For further information email John Roberts on spiderpromos@aol.com or Pat Cannon at The Scene on patcannonn@yahoo.co.uk.

Revolution in the Air: The Songs of Bob Dylan, 1957-1973

New Dylan Album

As trailed in ISIS Magazine (see The Wicked Messenger #6649 for January 4, 2009), a completely new Bob Dylan album is in the can. Our understanding is that the album was recorded last October in California (maybe with the recording sessions starting slightly earlier than that). The sequencing of the tracks was completed in January and the album is expected to contain ten tracks.

Jeff Rosen has brought the finished album to Europe for listening sessions in various cities including London, Munich and Oslo. These “listenings” were mainly for sales and marketing staff at Sony. We must assume that similar sessions have taken place in the United States. Several different titles have been put forward for the album but, for the most part, these seem to be little more than internet babble and at the time of the listenings (mid February) no title had been decided upon. At one time, it was suggested that the album would be released in the autumn, then a release date in May 2009 was mentioned but it seems that the release has now been brought forward to the last week of April, to coincide with later stages of Dylan’s forthcoming European tour. There are strong rumours about the circumstances in which the album came about (See entry for “My Own Love Song” below). There are also rumours that the musicians on the album are not all from the current touring band.

Meanwhile, we will leave you to speculate on the coincidence of any additional London concert date (April 26) and the release of a new album. We would suggest that you check the ISIS website regularly for further information.

My Own Love Song

Directed by Olivier Dahan, “My Own Love Song”, which finished shooting in Louisiana in early December 200, is a road movie staring Renée Zellweger and Forest Whitaker. Co-written and directed by Kristin Gore, the film, a melodrama that flirts with comedy, traces the trip to Memphis made by a former singer confined to a wheelchair and one of her close friends, a fireman who has suffered an accident at work. Filming began in October in Kansas and Louisiana. It seems that Bob Dylan was approached to provide the soundtrack to this film and the story goes that when he went into the studio to record, he was so impressed with what he had he decided to record his own new album.

Additional Information About The New Album

There are several additional pieces of information about the new album. One is that Dylan recorded thirteen songs in all, of which ten are expected to be on this release. Speculatively, this would leave out-takes for use in “My Own Love Song”, but nothing more has been heard regarding Dylan’s involvement with this film.

Mike Campbell (of the Heartbreakers) and David Hidalgo (of Los Lobos) are amongst the musicians on the new album. These two guitarists are said to have worked with what has been described as the nucleus of Dylan’s tour band. The Heartbreakers’ keyboard player Benmont Tench is also rumoured to have played on the album.

There is also speculation of a video to go with the album release, but there are no details as yet. Of course, that rumoured animation-video prepared for ‘Mississippi’ (from “Tell Tale Signs”) never saw the light of day, so perhaps that could be used – who knows? See previous post below.

I Don't Believe You - You're a Liar

It has been brought to our attention that there is a story circulating on various internet forums stating that Bob Dylan's new album features him covering his own songs! This item, which was supposedly circulated by Reuters, is totally unfounded. A search of Reuters website will confirm that no such news item was ever listed by them.

Record Collector give "The Songs He Didn't Write - Bob Dylan - Under The Influence" 5 stars

Full details regarding the book can be found HERE

The Songs He Didn’t Write: Bob Dylan Under The Influence by Derek Barker

Monumental chronicle of the songs that made Dylan tick; the ultimate Theme Time Radio Hour companion.

This is so much more than just another tome to throw on the ever-growing pile of Dylan books; more a brilliantly-entertaining launch-pad into the sometimes weird and often wonderful canon of wildly-diverse music which has propelled the man into performing a vast number of sometimes unlikely cover versions at studios, shows, soundchecks and even late 50s front rooms.

This marvellous exercise is testament to Barker’s dedication and knowledge of his subject, born out of 23 years editing foremost Dylan fanzine, Isis, and years of research, revealing more about its illusive subject’s ways and workings than a shelf-load of variations and theories on the well-trodden story. Though not the intention, Barker has also provided the perfect companion to Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour, which has featured many of these songs, giving dates, chart placings and artist backgrounds along with where Dylan covered them and crucial human commentary element.

The earliest entry is Dylan’s first recorded appearance with a couple of mates in Minnesota: an eight-song rock’n’roll/doo wop medley cut onto three 7s on Christmas Eve 1956. The near-500-page book takes the encyclopaedic format to document hundreds of songs, ranging from expected inclusions such as Woody Guthrie and the basement tapes, to surprises the likes of Mungo Jerry’s In The Summertime, The Beatles’ Yesterday, 1992’s return tribute to Hendrix by performing Dolly Dagger in Australia, and the immortal shock encores of The Clash’s London Calling during the November 2005 Brixton Academy residency. Appendix One lists songs which Dylan played at anywhere from gigs and studios, to friends’ apartments during specific years from 1956 onwards, while the frustration of craving to hear inclusions such as the 1990 version of Little Feat’s Willin’ may require bootleg-hunting, so relevant CDs are listed in Appendix Two. Indispensable. «««««

Possible Club Date In Sweden

Rumours are emerging that Dylan may play a small club date in Sweden prior to the commencement of the Spring European tour. This date could take place on March 22 at the 00 capacity Debaser Medis in Stockholm. This is the same venue that Dylan played prior to the start of his 2007 tour.

There is still no firm news regarding an extra London date. Watch This Space!!

Sirius XM Avoid Filing For Bankruptcy

The New York times reported (February 11, 2009) that Sirius XM had hired Joseph A. Bondi, a bankruptcy lawyer with Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett to prepare for possible bankruptcy filing. At the time of reporting the news, The New York Times was very hopeful that a backer or buyer could be found.

Less than a week later, Billboard.biz reported that Liberty Media, whose interests include QVC, DirecTV and IAC, will invested $530 million to keep Sirius XM on the air. It seems that Liberty will immediately pump $250 million into Sirius XM to avoid them filing bankruptcy. Assumedly this will allow the continuation of Theme Time Radio Hour.

If you missed the Co-op advert last night it is available HERE

 Dylan's Co-op ad

The Co-operative Group is to launch its £10m re-branding campaign with a two-and-a-half minute commercial during Coronation Street.

It is believed to be the second time a brand has taken up the entire middle ad break during the popular ITV1 soap opera. In 2004, McCain rolled out a three-minute ad during Coronation Street to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The TV execution, by McCann Erickson, will make its debut on Monday 16 February at approximately 7:40pm.

A 60-second ad will subsequently run for four-weeks, before returning to screens in July and August. The ad ends with the strap line, ‘Good for everyone'. The TV ad featuring Bob Dylan's song ‘Blowin' in the Wind', shows a child blowing the seeds from a daffodil clock and the seeds fly across the globe. The ad then displays several different scenes depicting the Co-operative's charitable work in the community.

Group marketing director Patrick Allen said that all future campaigns will focus on the corporate social responsibility work and ethical positioning of the brand and its trading businesses, including Co-operative Food, Travel and Financial Services

BBC4 Bob Dylan Programme, Wed 21 May, 22:00-22:40

Bob Dylan's Indian Birthday: Storyville In Shillong, North India, each year the village comes together to celebrate the birthday of their musical hero - Bob Dylan.

At the heart of the celebrations is Lou Majaw, a local celebrity who has toured India performing Dylan's songs for over 30 years. This film takes a behind-the-scenes look at Majaw's life seeing how the rock and roll lifestyle is affecting him. Some strong language.

THE NEXT “BOOTLEG SERIES” RELEASE

This was included by Ian Woodward in the paper version of the ISIS Newsletter, sent out on Wednesday 9 April, 200.

For some time now, traces of rumour have been accumulating that, between them, suggest Legacy Records will be releasing another in the “Bootleg Series” later this year. In itself, this may not be too surprising but it seems that, like the very first in the “Bootleg Series”, this will be a “(rare and unreleased)” issue. This forthcoming album has not yet appeared on the Sony schedules but a September release is anticipated, subject only to the usual unforeseen delays. This is expected to be a double–CD of mainly officially-unreleased studio material that, chronologically speaking, will overlap with the original “Volumes 1-3” release.

Dylan’s Canadian and European Tour 200

From a variety of sources, I have pieced together the likely itinerary and schedule of Dylan’s forthcoming Canadian and European tour. I must stress that, as far as is known, no contracts have been signed for the European leg, so some details could very well change. Frankly, this list is a mixture of report, rumour and reasoned supposition. Nevertheless, I believe it to be as well-founded as could be at this point in time.

Cate Blanchett wins Globe for Dylan role

AUSTRALIAN actress Cate Blanchett won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress for her role in the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There. Blanchett was not in Hollywood to hear the news of her award but said: "I wish circumstances would allow me to be there. As this is a true ensemble piece, I share this totally with Christian Bale, Marcus Carl Franklin, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere and Ben Whishaw [the other actors who played incarnations of Dylan in the biopic]. And, of course, none of this would be possible without the great man himself. Bob Dylan, wherever you are, whoever you are, I thank you deeply."

The exhibition titled Hard Rain - Remaking a World Gone Wrong which is described as 'stunning soul-searching images from around the globe reflecting mankind's destructive impact on our planet , inspired by Bob Dylan's potent lyrics.' Our visit to the exhibition made us reevaluate the prescient imagery of a song written in 1963 by the young Bob Dylan. The exhibition is on until Thursday 31st. January in the Fossil Garden at the Royal Botanic Garden, Inverleith Row, Edinburgh from 10am. until 4-00pm daily and is free. The Garden is also very fine with a good cafe!

Limited-edition Bob Dylan Encyclopedia t-shirt

There is a new, very limited-edition Bob Dylan Encyclopedia t-shirt now on sale on Michael Gray’s blog (at http://bobdylanencyclopedia.blogspot.com/), following the one that sold out in 2006. Again the new one is black high-quality cotton, again there’s the same understatedness to it  -  no writing, plain black back  -  but this time the image is silver instead of white (and the silver does not go grungy in the wash), and the sizes available are Small, Large of Extra Large. Photo and details on the blog.

Getting "Theme Time Radio Hour" on your computer

XM Radio is available via AOL (America On Line) on the internet but, outside of the United States, it is not always a straightforward process to find the link. Searches sometimes get you referred back to your own domestic AOL home page. ISIS has been told that this is the URL you need:

http://music.aol.com/radioguide/xm_radio_guide

Scroll down the list of XM channels, past the ones with an > at the start, until you get to the printed list. Scroll down the printed list looking for XM Deep Tracks (also called XM 40) and XM The Village (also called XM15). "Theme Time Radio Hour" is broadcast on (1) XM Deep Tracks, starting at 10.00 a.m. ET on Wednesdays, and (2) XM The Village, starting at 12 noon ET on Wednesdays. You will have to time-shift for your own time zone to get the programme. There are various "encore" broadcasts on both channels during the week. Also, it is broadcast on XMX, the XM exclusives channel (also called XM2), all day on Wednesdays.

Let us know how you get on. Also, we'd welcome details of the "encore" broadcast times (as there appears to be conflicting information on these); we can then let others know.

Commercially unreleased Dylan track on upcoming charity CD

On 19 November, a charity CD compilation will be available in Hard Rock International's cafes and hotels/casinos. Entitled SERVE2, the CD will be made up, almost entirely, of tracks that have not been commercially available before. Dylan has contributed The Ballad Of Hollis Brown from his 1963 Carnegie Hall concert, a track that has previously been available only on a promotional CD.

All net proceeds will go to Artists Against Hunger & Poverty, a programme that is part of WHY (World Hunger Year), a non-profit organization fighting hunger and poverty around the world and for which Hard Rock has raised over $1million to date.

Other artists on the CD, which will available digitally with bonus tracks, include: Bruce Springsteen, KT Tunstall, Joss Stone and Jackson Browne.

The digital download will be available from 6 November on www.hardrock.com, www.worldhungeryear.org and at online retail stores via The Orchard digital distribution network.

Old Dylan Poem Surfaces Again

A Swedish newspaper has recently carried a report about "Go Away You Bomb", an early Dylan poem written at the request of Izzy Young, then the proprietor of the Folklore Center in New York's Greenwich Village. This poem was first published in June 191 by OCCASIONALLY, an early Dylan fanzine that was put together by ISIS's own "Wicked Messenger", Ian Woodward. Here's the way it was first published, way back when.

THE BEST OF BOB DYLAN'S THEME TIME RADIO HOUR

Available to order now, full details here

"DREAM DYLAN LIVE" on BBC Radio

The Wicked Messenger reports - On Saturday, 6 October 2007 at .00 pm BST, BBC Radio 2 will broadcast "Dream Dylan Live", a compilation of 11 live Dylan tracks from across the years, introduced by Bob Harris.

According to the BBC, four of these tracks have not been previously available (officially at least) but only two of these "rarities" are known for certain. The BBC has made it clear that Groom Still Waiting At The Altar will be from San Francisco on 15 November 190, with Mike Bloomfield on guitar. Blowin' in the Wind is another rarity and this may be from the Carnegie Hall concert of 26 October 1963. Although the BBC publicity has been unspecific (and occasionally inaccurate), it is thought that Only A Pawn In Their Game and Love Sick are the two other "rarities", though no dates are given for these.

As for the rest, dates are given but a couple are clearly incorrect: The Times They Are A-Changin' (1964), Mr Tambourine Man (1970 ????), Like A Rolling Stone (1974), Maggie's Farm (1965), All Along The Watchtower (195????), To Make You Feel My Love (199) and Things Have Changed 2000).

It isn't clear whether "Dream Dylan Live" will be available on the internet or on the BBC's "Play Again" feature.

DYLAN IN NASHVILLE STUDIO FOR TWO DAYS

Friday's issue of THE TENNESSEAN carried the news that Dylan spent two days at the Sound Emporium Recording Studio in Nashville this week. On Monday, 17 September, he "did some tracking" (presumably audio recording) and on Tuesday, 1 September, he "shot a video .. for 'Hard Rain', a benefit for UNICEF".  While we have no inside information on this "tracking" session, it is possible that it was in connection with the Hank Williams tribute album being co-ordinated by Dylan - as reported on 13 July 2007 in The Wicked Messenger #211 (in ISIS # 134, page ). Similarly, we have no inside knowledge on "Hard Rain" but UNICEF's 2007 International Children's Day of Broadcasting takes place on 9 December, with the theme, "The World We Want", so perhaps that's it. If not, we are pleased to publicise the UNICEF event here anyway.

Drawn Blank

On Sunday, October 2, the first ever exhibition of Bob Dylan's artwork will open at Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, in Chemnitz, Germany.

Exclusively for this exhibition, Bob Dylan has produced more than 200 remarkably intense color variations on pictorial motifs from a book of drawings and sketches done from 199 to 1992, which were published in 1994 under the title Drawn Blank by Random House.

In the book's preface, Dylan explained that these works were intended as sketches for paintings which he eventually planned to complete. These now fully realized works - photo-lithographs transferred to deckle-edged paper - have been stunningly reworked by the artist in watercolor and gouache and will be displayed for the first time in Chemnitz.

When asked how Chemnitz came to be the venue for "The Drawn Blank Series" exhibition, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz Director Ingrid Moessinger explained, "I first came across Bob Dylan's book of drawings at an historical exhibition about Bob Dylan at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York. I went straight out and bought my own copy and immediately began to track down the originals."

Bob Dylan commented, "I was fascinated to learn of Ingrid's interest in my work, and it gave me the impetus to realize the vision I had for these drawings many years ago." He added, "If not for this interest, I don't know if I even would have revisited them."

The exhibition will run from 2 October 2007 to 3 February 200

The Ronson Re-version of "Most Likely ..."

The Wicked Messenger reports that the video for the Mark Ronson re-mix version of Most Likely You Go Your Way will be premiered exclusively in Britain on Channel 4 on 13 September. The video reportedly contains: 1) at least four people playing Dylan, shot obliquely; 2) some Dylan-related references - almost in-jokes; and 3) Wyclef Jean as a soul singer. The Ronson re-mix track itself will not appear on DYLAN, neither on the 3-CD set nor the 1-CD distillation [contrary to reports seen elsewhere] but may be on a bonus disc, with Dylan's original, but only on early production run(s).

The Ronson Re-version of "Most Likely" is on the BBC's listen Again site:

It was played about 30 minutes in (press the 15 minutes button twice). You get about 2 minutes of spoken intro followed by about 3 minutes of the remix. It was repeated in the same programme ( a very, very rare occurrence) about 30 minutes later.

Mark Ronson Re-mix of "Most Likely You Go Your Way"

A brief excerpt of this re-mix will be posted on the "dylan07" website on Monday 30 July as an advance taster for fans. The full version will be aired first on Wednesday 1 August, most likely on the Zane Lowe show on BBC Radio 1, which goes out between 7.00 p.m. and 9.00 p.m. A video for this track is under consideration.

Dylan at Newport release

This week, the Expecting Rain website carried the two-week-old Dylan Digest report about the Dylan at Newport release, which is perfectly fine. Unfortunately, this came with a comment that it will be the next "Bootleg Series" release and a DVD+CD. We wish to make it clear that this additional information did not come from us. Karl-Erik has kindly amended the Expecting Rain entry after this was pointed out to him.

It has also been brought to our attention that other websites are now reporting that this release will be "Bootleg Series Volume " and are stating that this information has come from ISIS Magazine's Dylan Digest.

With regards to Dylan at Newport, our present belief is that the item will be released as part of a "Columbia Performances" series.

To read our original posting of  July, see the final item on this page. The information for this item was extracted from Ian Woodward's The Wicked Messenger in ISIS Magazine issue #133

MAJOR NEWS ITEM "DYLAN AT NEWPORT" DVD

July 2007 Extracted from Ian Woodward's The Wicked Messenger in ISIS Magazine issue #133

The expanded edition of Festival, anticipated at the time that DVD came out, never appeared but sources now report that Dylan's appearances at the 1963, 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals have been compiled into an 0-minute DVD, to be released by Sony/BMG Legacy strand by the year end. It will also be shown on PBS-TV as part of its pledge programming in December - and it has been offered to other broadcasters, too. It will reportedly contain all the footage that Murray Lerner shot of Dylan at these festivals.
